The Brookfield Zoo in
Chicago has recently begun
a plan of having area citizens
“adopt” their exotic animals
and pay set fees to cover the
feeding costs of the orphans.
After the look on Leroy’s
face when the last feed
statement arrived, I decided
that here was an idea whose
time had come here on the
farm. Therefore, we are
wondering if any animal
lovers out there might want
to join our “take a cow to
lunch” foster parent plan.

characteristics which
require sponsorship beyond
that average fee.
For instance,there’s
Millie. She’s a good ole pet,
who might nudge you in the
bade if you happen to forget
to scratch her head. She, and
other members of her
family, have a most
wasteful habit. Every first -
bite of feed they take gets
pitched over the shoulder
and across their backs. They
can’t be missed in the feed
bunk lineup, because of the
invariable heavy dusting of
hay or silage across the
topline. Sponsorship of
Millie, or her daughters,
would require an extra 75
cents each day for wasting
resources?
Or how about Amy? Her
biggest fault is that she is
basically" a white cow,
covered with Appaloosa •
type spots. And white cows
usually aren’t white, they’re
assorted shades of barnyard
brown. For an extra 50 cents
daily, maybe we could
arrange with the herdsman
to scrub Amy’s “whitewalls”
once a week.
