Houser was named Penn sylvania Pork All American at the By JOANNE SPAHR SCHAEFFERSTOWN, Pa. - Terri Ward, the 1976 national pork queen, graced the gathering of the Penn sylvania Pork Producers Council last week when they met for their annual dinner banquet at the Schaef ferstown Fire Hall, here. Miss Ward, the 19-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ward of LaMoille, HI., has been serving the pork industry for two years in a promotional capacity. Two years ago she reigned as the Illinois pork queen which served as a preparation for the national title she now holds. Since her crowning in Indianapolis on March 10 at the American Pork Congress, she has traveled across the country to promote pork on behalf of Donald Brown, Hanover Rl, received the 4-H swine production award from the Pennsylvania Pork Producers Council at their annual banquet last week I the nation’s producers. In her after-dinner speech to the Pennsylvania group, she told of some of her ex periences on the radio and in personal appearances around the country. Miss Ward also showed a film describing the ways in which the National Pork Producers Council is spending the money they receive from producers for pork promotion. In that film it was pointed out that the NPPC is the largest com modity organization in the United States with a membership of 80,000 in dividuals. Eighty per cent of the funding they receive from the pork producers goes toward making the public aware of pork and its values. Donald Brown, Hanover HI, received a 4-H swine production award. Brown, age 16, raised 10 sows as a project, and from those 10 sows got an average of eight pigs per litter. The highest he ever had in one litter was 13. He raises mostly Yorkshire crosses. In order to receive the 4-H production award, Brown filled out 4-H blue forms and was judged on these. Jay Bomgardner, Ann ville, also received a trophy from the Pork Council for his showmanship honors at the State Farm Show. Elwood Houser, Lebanon R 5, was also named Penn sylvania Pork All American at Saturday’s event for his outstanding work in the swine industry. Later in the week, Houser went on to be named national Pork All G H American at the American Pork Congress in Des Moines, lowa.
