Meeting here a week ago for
their annual banquet, the
Garden Spot Young Farmers
chose Robert Book as their
outstanduig young fanner
for the year. Book operates
Rocoma Farms Dairy near
Bareville and has a jugging
operation with complete on
the-far processing. In ad
dition to his 75 Holsteins, the
award recipient is kept busy
with 250 acres of cropland on
three different farms.
The group recognized
several other of its members
for noteworthy
achievements during the
past year.
J. Kenneth Hershey of
Kinzers HI captured the
dairy award, on the basis of
work with his 79 cows which
averaged 15,756 pounds of
milk and 613 pounds of
butterfat last year on DHIA.
In the com for grain
contest, Bill Fisher placed
first with yields of 202.8
bushels per acre. In the
second slot was Ray
Geissinger, 188.7 bushels per
acre; third, Glenn Hershey,
179.4 bushels per acre, and
fourth, Ken Hershey with
178.2 bushels per acre.
Clyde Martin won the com
for silage contest with a yield
of 29.5 tons per acre. In
terms of total digestible
nutrients, (TON) that
worked out to 14,160 pounds
per acre. Walter Martin
placed second with 26 tons
per acre and third was John
Landis with 23.6 tons.
