They shine
County’s FFA program
By JOANNESPAHR
LANCASTER, Pa.
Hollywood celebrities
they’re not, but in the field of
agriculture they are stars in
their own rights. Last week
Jeff Aungst, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Hiram Aungst,
Elizabethtown Rl, and
Marty Hoover, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Hoover,
Stevens Rl, were chosen as
the outstanding Lancaster
County FFA members in
farming and agri-business.
Jeff is a Star Red Rose
Farmer, and Marty is Star
Red Rose Agribusinessman.
This week Lancaster
Farming made visits to their
homes to see what made
them shine a little brighter
than the other Red Rose
Chapter recipients in the
county, and came away with
a few answers.

Education at his school for
two years now. This is a set
up where he goes to school in
the mornings and is free to
work on his father’s farm
from noon on. So, the farm
has become the major
concentration of his
energies, which is evidenced
from the modernization and
improvements which Jeff
and his father are either
doing now or have recently
finished.
Last J uly they began work
on a 60 z 120 manure pit
which they’ve since com
pleted; in ’74 they built a free
stall heifer barn; two
summers ago they added 20
feet onto their bulk feeder
and at the same time in
stalled an automatic feeder
system; last summer they
built a new garage; and now
they are in the process of
completing a wind break on
one side of their dry cow pen
in Lancaster
to stop the North wind and to
catch the sun.
-The Aungsts are almost all
involved in the farm. Jeff’s
mother, Erma, loves
working with their 53
animals, as do Jeff and his
father.
Jeff also has two sisters,
one of which, Joy, is par
ticularly interested in the 4-
H and other ag-related ac
tivities.
