HUD urges flood insurance purchase
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Housing and Urban
Development Regional
Administrator Russell Byers
recently urged homeowners
to consider buying federally
subsidized flood insurance as
soon as possible.
“The ice m the rivers and
all the snow on the ground
must go somewhere when
the weather gets warmer,”
he said. “We are very
concerned about the
possibilities of serious
flooding this spring.”
Byers explained that HUD
offers federally subsidized
flood insurance that affords
homeowners in flood-prone
areas the opportunity to
protect themselves from
severe flood losses. Flood
damage is not covered by
usual homeowners’ policies.

Grange week is approaching
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Over 5,500 local chapters of
the nation’s oldest farm
organization, the National
Grange, will celebrate
Grange Week, April 24-30.
Organized in 1867, the
Grange has been a steadfast
spokesman for family far
mers. During its 110 year
history its base has
broadened to include both
rural and suburban in
terests. It is the country’s
only fraternal farm group
and was the first
organization of any kind to
admit women on an equal
basis with men.
In reviewing Grange
history, National Master
John W. Scott, said the
Grange is best known as a
family organization. He said
the Grange has consistently
supported the family farm
concept which has achieved
unparalleled efficiency in
the production of
agricultural products.
Among the Grange’s first
major accomplishments was
obtaining cabinet level
status for the Secretary of
Agriculture and the sub
sequent establishment of the
U.S. Department of
Agriculture. Also initiated
by the Grange were federal
anti-trust laws, rural free
mail delivery, agriculture
extension service, Farmers
Home Administration and it
was one of the original
supporters of the Interstate
Highway System. It is the
only general farm
organization with
headquarters in Washington,

Goat club expands
The Del Mar Penn Dairy Goat Club has launched into its
1976-77 year with new officers and expanded membership.
The organization continues to be dedicated to its original aim
which is to be instructive. Monthly gatherings begin with
covered dish supper for families followed by brief business
meetings and then instruction on the scheduled topic.
Members come from four states including those people with
no goats or small herds to large herds. The dairy goat of
today is becoming increasingly popular in the United States
while we continue to discover its assets. As our populations
expand and there is more competition for land, dairy goat
numbers increase as they have in most other countries of the
world. The animals are ideal for the small rural dweller and
produce besides superb milk, cheese, butter, meat, mohair
and leather, says Mrs. John A. Smith, a club member from
Townsend, Del.
