Responsible for annually adjusting hunting regulations to conform with the estimated population of a particular species, water fowl managers must know well before the season opens what the supply of the game birds will be. Otherwise, the existence of the species could be threatened by over harvesting. Henry M. Reeves of the Office of Migratory Bird Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has used pictures from a polaror biting satellite operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to help determine the reproductive success of several species of arctic nesting geese. From his findings, hunting limits on the species can be set. Most geese available to Canadian, American, and Mexican hunters come from arctic breeding grounds - the When you need some money, pre sent your Easy Banking Card to any Farmers First teller; or, insert your Easy Banking Card in any Farmers First Round the Clock Teller; or simply write a personal check drawn on your FREE Farmers First check ing account. Forest tree nurseries operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources’ Bureau of Forestry are now accepting orders for the Spring planting season. A landowner who has plantable forest land can reforest his land for sur prisingly little direct cost. Seedlings are available from the state forest nurseries for low cost and the landowner can often do the planting himself. Membtr F 0 l C Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Jan. 29,1977 — that closed seasons and several good nesting years were required to restore populations to levels suitable for hunting. With imagery from the NOAA-5 polar orbiting satellite, wildlife managers can monitor habitat con ditions and predict probable animal production in a timely and economical manner, Reeves said. A key to successful tree planting is advance planning and preparation. The project should be planned well in advance so that seedlings can be ordered while a good selection of species are available and any necessary site preparation can be started. Private landowners who order seedlings from the state forest nurseries should have approximatey one and one-half (1%) acres of open, plantable land. Planting seedlings in dense existing woodland is not recom mended. Seedlings from the state forest nurseries are available to private lan downers for timber production and watershed protection purposes.
