Reporter GERMANSVILLE, Pa. - The Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club banquet on January 22 was a par ticularly spedal event as members of the Baby Beef, Sheep, and Swine clubs gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year a§ well as the suc cessful completion of the Sheep and Swine clubs’ first formal year. More than 200 persons enjoyed the appropriate beef, lamb stew, and "ham dinner served at the Ger mansville Fire Company, after which awards were presented for outstanding performance. The Livestock Judging Team was the first up. The team trophies, co sponsored by Schochary Farms and Charles Snyder, Inc., were presented by Greg Snyder of Schochary Farms who observed that judging showed “a pretty good track record.” Snyder summed up the Lehigh team’s achievements this past year recalling that they placed third at the York com petition, second at Delaware Valley-College competition, and first at the Allentown Fair event. The team also placed third at State 4-H Days - a significant showing, Snyder pointed out, “since the first place Lancaster County team went on to take second in the nationals." Livestock judging team members accepting the honors were: Grant 'Grim, who also received the Baby Beef Club senior showmanship award; Joe Sikorski; Gail Snyder, who also captured the overall fitting award and reserve senior showmanship honors; and Ardith Wetzel. Sarah Fretz, news reporter for the Baby Beef group, took a generous share of tbe-honors at the Saturday night event including trophies for the Lehigh County champion steer, outstanding beef club member, and reserve champion intermediate Explosions alert OSHA WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Labor Department’s Oc cupational Safety Oc cupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has alerted its field offices to the possible safety and health hazards produced by im proper handling of ethylene gas in fruit ripening warehouses. In a memorandum to regional administrators and area directors, OSHA of ficials noted that more than 10 explosions have occurred in fruit ripening warehouses during the past two years in the continental United States and Hawaii. These ex plosions have been at tributed to the use of ethylene gas as a ripening agent. The memo directs OSHA field offices to schedule inspections to ensure compliance with the ap plicable standards for the handling and use of com pressed gases. with banquet showman. Other baby beef club awards went 'to Diane Krause, intermediate showman; Melissa Fretz, junior showman; Ralph Donner; reserve junior showman; and Jane Sikorski, winner of the weight gain trophy. Ibis award was given to the steer which showed the greatest weight increase between the time of the Allentown Fair in August and 4-H Roundup in Noverpber. In sheep'club achievement Melissa Fretz matched her sister Sarah’s performance taking the club's junior showmanship trophy. Nine year-old Joshua Grim was specially honored as the Sheep Club’s most deserving first year member.
