—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Jan. 29, 1977 24 Outstanding com yields cited CARLISLE, Pa. - The Cumberland County Corn Clinic held recently was highlighted by the recognition of the 5 Acre Corn Club winners. Donald Overdorff, county agent praised the ten contestants for their efforts in demon strating a high level of com production techniques. George Stambaugh, Newville R 1 was the Gold ribbon winner with 214.6 bushels of com per acre. This yield also won him first place in the state in the ear corn class. Blue ribbon winners were - Harvey Sunday, Mechanicsburg Rl, 170.8 bu. per acre; Paul & Harry Hoch, Shippensburg Rl, 154.4 bu-acre; Robert Berkheimer, Mechanicsburg R 2 150.2 bu-acre. Receiving Red ribbons were - Ronald Mackey, Newville R 2 138.2 bu-acre; Marlin and Michael Miller, Carlisle R 2 135.9 bu acre; Richard Mains, Newville Rl 132.5 bu-acre; Francis Mains, Newville Rl, 127.3 bu-acre and Jack Sunday, Carlisle Rl 125.2 bu Carol Heisler, Schuylkill County Dairy Princess, poses with Bruce Leatherman, center, who once again topped the county DHIA program last year. Leatherman tops DHIA SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - The Schuylkill County Dairy Herd Improvement Association held its 15th annual meeting and banquet recently with awards presented to dairy farmers for the production of their dairy herds during the period of October 1, 1975 to September 30, 1976. David L. Kantner, county agent, presented the award of high herd in Schuylkill County based on pounds of fat produced to the herd of Bruce Leatherman, Tamaqua, who finished with a herd average of 703 pounds of fat. During the testing year, a total of 28 herds exceeded an average production of 400 pounds of butterfat per cow. A list of those over 600 follows: Bruce Leatherman, Tamaqua, 17918 M, 703 F; Norm and Dale Rothermel, Pitman, 18345 M, 696 F; Miller and Rex, RD 1, An dreas, 16777 M, 653 F; Kurtz Dairy Farm, RD 2, Pine Grove, 15746 M, 625 F; Wilbert Moyer, RD 1, Schuylkill Haven, 15303 M, 611 F. acre. A white ribbon went to Frank Yost, Newville R 2 with 119.1 bu-acre. The clinic also featured an educational discussion on “What Went Wrong With Com Weed Control in 1976”. Willis McClellen, Extension agronomist from Penn State, was guest speaker. Stanley Gesell, Extension en tomologist from Penn State covered “Controlling Com Insects - All of Them” and “Waxy and Lysme Com Types was discussed by JoseplTMcGahen, Extension agronomist from the University. Galen Byers, corn producer near Hickorytown covered the highlights of the Mid- Atlantic No-Till Convention recently held in Gettysburg. Roland Freund, county agent, analyzed -the production cost summaries of the 5 Acre Com Club participants. Dave Thompson, from the Pa. Department of Agriculture updated the growers on the requirements for pesticide certification. High individual records were also reported with the high five individual records for milk production going to: Bruce Leatherman on Lady with 24,714 M, 1009 F„- Norman and Dale Rothermel on Darlene with 24,548 M, 942 F.; Bruce Leatherman on Betsy with 23,700 M, 925 F; Miller and Rex on Cookie with 22,704 M, 850 F.; Kurtz Dairy Farm on Mary with 22,116 M. 823 F. High individual records for fat included the following: Carl J. Snyder on Frances with 18,059 M. 1047 F.; Bruce Leatherman on Lady, Norman and Dale Rothermel on Darlene, Bruce Leatherman on Betsy, and Norman and Dale Rothermel on Ella with 19,972 Milk, 862 Fat. During the 1976 testing year, Schuylkill County had 1,498 cows on test averaging 13,413 pounds of milk and 534 pounds of fat The total cost of feed was $707.00 per animal with the value of the milk above feed costs being $643.00 per cow.
