—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Jan. 22, 1977 18 Tips offered on windshield wiper care Keeping trucks, tractors and combines in good working order is a key element in successful farm management. But an essential part of many driveable farm vehicles - the windshield wiper - often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Following is some in formation from the An derson Company (ANEO), on what farmers can do to keep windshield wiper blades and arms in good working conditions: 1. - Wash the windshield and wipers regularly with a mild soap and water solution to prolong the life of the rubber wiper element and prevent smearing. Dust and dirt are especially harmful to the rubber element. So, too, are exhaust fumes, gasoline and oil. However, when washing wiper refills, don’t use too strong a soap solution. Strong soap could damage the rubber refills. 2. - Replace rubber wiper element every six months. Dear Friends, These cold winter months make it just impossible to do any outside work. That just has to wait til spring. We know that these cold days make you want to work indoors and we don't blame you. There are probably quite a few repair jobs that you should be doing indoors any way. That's where we can help. We rent all kinds of equipment for all kinds of projects. You can rent just about anything from us. Air compressors and jack hammers for ripping out concrete floors, floor grinders for removing rough spots, and many other concrete tools. We rent scaffolding and ladders, saws and drills, just about anything else. So, when you want to start that indoor project and need some equipment, think of us. In the case of wiper elements that can’t be refilled, such as with flat windshields found on many of today’s enclosed cabs, the entire wiper blade should be changed every six months or when they begin to streak. Windshield wiper refills are interchangeable so the blades and refills from one manufacturer will fit compatibly sized and designed wiper arms of other brands. 3. If the wiper blade chatters, adjust the arm or replace the blade. Chattering blades result from a variety of causes. Corrective measures often can be taken to avoid outright replacement. For example, chattering blades can result from improper positioning of the wiper arm. A simple adjustment with a crescent wrench usually will solve the problem. You can accomplish this by turning and on the wipers, then shutting off the ignition when the blade is at nudstroke. Next, remove the blade and see if the arm tip is parallel to the glass. If it isn’t, use the wrench to twist the arm into a parallel position with the glass. Chatter also can develop from a lip on the wiper blade caused by cold weather, neglect or old age. Removing the blade, washing it in warm water and exposing it to warm air can solve the problem. Aging blades and refills respond less suc cessfully to this treatment, but it doesn’t hurt to try it first before replacing them. There’s always the chance, too, that chattering results from blades or refills that have not been installed correctly. For example, a wiper blade that has not been properly snapped into position will chatter. So too will a straigl r blade installed on a curved windshield. Removing and installing them again correctly may eliminate the trouble. Chatter also can be caused by incorrect pressure on the blade. The wiper blade must press against the glass with just the right amount of force to prevent chatter, squeaking, and skipping. Pressure adjustable arms are no longer manufactured although some older farm vehicles may still have them. If a machine has a pressure adjustable arm, the "CHIP” HAS GOT IT WHERE IT COUNTS! Practically all wiper elements are made of natural rubber today, but there are some synthetic products around. The major wiper manufacturers have found, after extensive research and testing, that various synthetics and plastics don’t clean as well as natural rubber. Some solutions can damage the wiper blade elements if they are too concentrated. Check the directions on the fluid container for proper dilution of the solution. 6. - Changing position of wiper refills can sometimes prolong the lifespan of the element. _ 2w mat mhua /m*Jh,** *y ■&**%*■**« *,* 9 *** * <g|gg. | f*&?m S*V. •• “ *-k-' ‘ifniiiMiiiiir’i --ir‘ii wrtst’jjtnCrt^nrr^^’'^'* ! »’ >*' PARK FOREST CHIP MISSY 2y 2m 121 d 2x 6,836 209 me 305 d 2x 18,960 571 ME Eric Hemsohn Damn Yoder Lynn Gardner Paul Herr 215 588 4704 717 733 0966 717 656 6509 717 284 4592 717 898 8694 717 898 8694 201 689 2605 215 374 7798 717 866 4228 717 993 2281 717 225 3758 609 463 3783 215 869 9187 James Charles Lamar Witmer Robert Kayhart Robert Greider Paul Martin Marvin Jomes Ira Boyer Gerald Hall Maurice Stump Periodically, try alter nating the refills from one blade arm to the other. This can only be done with refillable blades. 7. - Use snow blades during winter work. The windshield wiper industry has developed a flexible rubber jacket for regular wiper blades that it calls “snow blades.” Ice will not adhere to the snow blade and the rubber jacket stays flexible so it can effectively clean the windshield. Although the windshield wiper industry is constantly improving its products, farm managers should remember that the rubber elements don’t really wear out; they just gradually deteriorate. The rubber refill should be replaced about twice a year. OBS \*msz
