Breneman placed second to Boyd in the wrapper class. g o yd commented he has been around tobacco for all of his life and he and his father raised seven acres this past year. He uianted his crop in mid-June and was pretty 5eH satisfied with the way it produced, “It was a good year for curing,” he commented, “but we had a little too much rain which hurt the weight a little when we stripped it out.” } Winning the tobacco show came as a surprise to Boyd, who - at 18 has won numerous trophies in a 'wide variety of contests but not in tobacco. Another show won by the Ephrata youth here on Thursday was the 4-H com contest. John Yocum, who judged the show, remarked that Boyd’s com was ex ceptionally well filled to the tip, had uniform length, was free of disease, and the kernels were well filled and tight. Boyd said he bad grown the com in a one-acre plot on his father’s farm and had not bothered to thin it for competition. “It was grown under normal care,” he explained. Planted on the first of May, the com was actually picked before it was ripe in order to have it for contests at both the Ephrata and Manheim fairs. Boyd mil be taking both his com and tobacco to the Farm Show this week. The FFA com contest was won by Brace Wise of Bowmansville. There were 154 entries in the tobacco show this year, up from 111 the year before. Judges for the tobacco show were Maurice Hostetter and L.C. Whitmore. They both described this year’s show as having been better than last year’s in terms of quality and number of entries. “The contestants take pride in what they bring here, and they’re doing a good job,’’ Whitmore said.> Both thought the judging was tough, as they examined more than 150 hands of tobacco in order to find the most nearly perfect specimens. Among the qualities they looked for were chestnut brown color, thin and clean texture, and good open-bodied graining.
