END OF YEAR
ODDS AND ENDS
As a Christmas present to
myself I decided to clean off
my desk and give some
organization to my office.
The results may not be
immediately apparent; but,
I did run across some lists of
information that I don’t
know were to file, but you
might find useful. If you use
them, I won’t have to tile
them!...
Item - one 3-Vz by 5 inch
card with the word “lice”
written on it. Lice and bam
itch can cause a lot of
discomfort to dairy cattle in
the wintertime. Most cows in
Pennsylvania would benefit
from a treatment with
coumaphos or ciodrin during
the winter to keep down the
discomfort. You don’t have
to wait until the hair falls out
and cows scratch themselves
open to treat. In all
likelihood, a thorough
treatment would cut down on
the number of “dancers” at
milking time.
Item - Milking School
Registration Form. We will
be holding another milking
school in Lancaster on
January 18-19, 1977. As a
result of our schools these
last two winters, you asked
for this one. I already gave
out the registration form, but
you can enroll by sending me
your name, address,
telephone number and a five
dollar check made out to
“Extension Service”. You do
not have to be a Lancaster
County Dairymen to enroll -
All you need is time to be m
Lancaster from 9:30 a.m. -
3:00 p.m. on those days, five
dollars, and the will to be a
better milker. The
secretaries tell me we have
one strange applicant with a
funny name and a far north
address. How do you milk a

Facts for
dairymen
By Alan Bair
Assoc. County Agent
Lancaster, Pa.
quite a job out producing
milk! In 1940 the Lancaster
County DHIA average was
only 9,344 pounds of milk - in
1976 it was 13,762 pounds.
What does the future hold? I
think we are only just
beginning - your
achievement and efficiency
will only get better. Yes,
your costs of production are
going up rapidly; but, in the
last year alone, value of
product over feed cost rose
more than $2OO per cow.
Better buy the wife a new
coat for Christmas; it’s cold
and those cows need at
tention!
Item - List of teat dips.
Teat dips have been proven
to be effective in keeping
down the incidence of new
mastitis cases in the dairy
herd. The National Mastitis
Council did some testing and
came up with an approved
listing. If your teat dip is not
on the list, you’re missing
the boat. Also, remember;
keep it fresh - no 30 gallon
drums or several cases
sitting around don't let it
freeze - the pH may go down
down-down-ouch; and, start
over with fresh material
each day. Yes, DIP, not
spray, seems to be more
effective. If you don’t have
the listing, I have an extra
one.
Item - A big pile of feeding
program recommendations
from PSU. Many of your
neighbors are realizing how
profitable forage testing and
feed programming can be.
These on my desk won’t do
you much good, but with a
little effort on your part you
could have one specifically
tailored to you and your
cows' needs. And, how about
this! Your DHIA supervisor
will even help fill out the
simple form. Such a deal at
such a price!
Thanks so much for taking
these items from my desk.
That gives me a fresh start
for the new year, and I hope
it does the same for you.
