and turning to the metric
system.
What does this mean to the
consumer?
The metric system may
not complicate your life as
much as you think it will,
says Coral Morris, Ex
tension home management
specialist, at, the University
of Delaware. As a consumer,
you will need to know some
basic conversions between
the two systems, but the
metric, system is simple to
leam, she says.
It is based on a system of
tens. The basic units are the -

meter, the liter, and the
gram. A meter is equal to
about one and a tenth yards.
For your purpose in many
situations, you can
remember that it is a little
bit longer than a yard. A
liter is a little larger than a
quart (about 1.06 quarts). A
gram is about the weight of a
paper clip.
These are simplifications,
of course, says the home
management specialist, bu:
most consumers won’t need
to become experts to func
tion in the supermarket and
department store.
Some prefixes are added to
the basic units to form other
commonly used units. The
prefixes “milli,” “centi,”
and “kilo” are added to liter,
meter, and gram. “Milli”
means one-thousandth
(0.001). When added to a
meter, the term
“millimeter” is one-*
thousandth of a meter, ob
viously a small unit.
The term “cent!” means
one-hundredth (0.01), so
when added to a meter, a
“centimeter” means one
hundredth of a meter. “Kilo”
added to a unit means one
thousand times that unit.
Therefore, a kilometer is a
thousand times a meter.
But' these- conversions
probably do not really bring
home the point about how
large or how small the unit
- t.
is. Ms. Morris uses some
common objects to make this
clear. A millimeter is about
the diameter of a paper clip
wire. A centimeter is about
the width of a paper clip
(about 0.4 inch). A kilometer
(1000 meters) is a little
further than a half mile
(about 0.6 mile). A kilogram
is a little more than two
pounds (about 2.2 pounds).
And it takes five milliliters to
make a teaspoon.
Another aspect of metrics
which everyone will need to
be familiar with is Celsius
temperature scale. On our
present temperature scale
(Fahrenheit) water freezes
at 32 degrees, and it boils at
212 degrees. On the Celsius
scale, water freezes at zero
degrees and boils -at 100
degrees. To determine the
Celsuis temperature if you
know the Fahrenheit, you’ll
need to brush up on your
math, says Ms. Morris. First
subtract 32 from the
Fahrenheit temperature and
multiply the answer by five
ninths.
Don’t feel you must take a
crash course in metrics to
become an instant expert,
advises the home
management specialist.
Learn the basic units and
prefixes and.little_by little,
as you deal with them, you’ll
find yourself “thinking
metric” more and more.
