It used to be the fashion to have the fancy manufactured type adorning your tree, but now the trend has turned to having hand made Christmas ornaments. Of the many different types that you can make yourself, there is one that utilizes a styrofoam ball and designs made from Christmas napkins. Mrs. Jeannette Dillman, who gave Lancaster Farming the idea, says that these are terrific pieces of memorabilia, because for every ball she has made, the decoration on it comes from a napkin that holds a special significance to her and her family. To make these decorations, the only equipment you need are the styrofoam balls the size of Christmas tree bulbs, Christmas cutouts from 3-ply napkins, Hollywood glitter, and ,Mod Podge, a commercial decoupage finish that is water based. Mod Podge can be purchased in any craft or department store. The first thing to do if you want to try this craft is to hammer a good-sized nail into a board with the sharp end sticking up. This is to hold the styrofoam ball stationary so that it is easier to work with. Then, take the top layer with the design on it from a three-ply napkin and cut around the design. After this, paint a styrofoam ball with Mod Podge and apply the cut-out design. Then, immediately, paint the ball again and apply die Hollywood glitter. At this point, let the ball dry overnight and add a bo w for hanging. Pomander balk make aromatic centerpieces Pomander balls are always a favorite at this time of year. Then, fasten a bow and a hook to the top. Finish the pomander ball with a small pine cone fastened to the bow. And, while most people think of using these deodorizers only one year when the citrus fruit is fresh, the pomander balls aroma lasts years and years. So, when they are no longer attractive to hang up, make a pretty centerpiece with them by putting them in a woven basket with freshly cut evergreens, fruit, and wooden carved birds, or any other decorative piece you might have around the house. Mrs. Aria Bowman, Halifax, who suggested this idea, says these pomander centerpieces should always be near the front door or in a hallway, so the first thing guests smell when they come into your home is their delicious scent. Mrs. Bowman adds one other touch to her pomander balls. Instead of just putting the cloves all over the orange or lemon, she makes a design with the spices. This makes the ball more attractive both for the moment and later on when it becomes part of her centerpiece. P. E. Hess, Butler Mfg. Co.
