The MEF headquarters office is located temporarily in Denver. Alan R. Middaugh, MEF president, said the executive committee decided to move ahead, more quickly than previously planned, with the establishment of a Far East office in Tokyo and a European office at a site to be selected within the European Economic Community. The decision to open a Far East office was made following a recent visit to Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore by Middaugh and Robert Mannion of FAS. “Based on what we found \ Subscriptions Will Begin With Christmas Issue County in Japan,” Middaugh said, “I’d rate the Far East high on our priority list. The biggest potential in Japan is in quality U. S. meat for the hotel and restaurant trade, but the volume of U. S. meat in Japanese supermarkets also is increasing. “At present, Australia accounts for 90 per cent of Japan’s beef imports, and the U. S. shares the remaining 10 per cent with other countries. We think it’s possible to increase the U. S. share to at least 40 per cent in the not too distant future. We also think that U. S. exports of pork to Japan can be increased. Pork is under'a variable levy system, but, unlike beef, it enjoys com plete market access. “A full-time MEF em ployee in Tokyo can develop new and expanded markets for meat as well as meat by products. A Tokyo office also can bring about improved relations with the Japanese government, leading to a reduction in the quantitative restrictions now placed on U. S. meat suppliers.” Middaugh plans to survey the market in Europe m March. While there, he will study alternative locations for the MEF’s European office. The European Economic Community’s current import system severely restricts meat from other countries, Middaugh noted, but there still is great potential to increase shipments of U. S. variety meats in particular. The value of the U. S.’ annual exports of meat animals, meat and meat products is about equal to the State.. value of imports. However, the exports are largly by products like tallow, grease, hides and skins, as well as variety meats. Shipments of beef, veal, pork and lamb are very limited. In fact, annual exports of red meats now amount to only about 0.7 per cent of U. S. production. “Through the MEF program,” Middaugh said, Soybean growers say ‘hands off! HUDSON, lowa - The American Soybean Association has recommended that the soybean loan level be set at 65 per cent of total production cost, or approximately $3.50 per bushel. The action came during ASA’s annual winter board meeting in New Orleans,La. “We continue to believe in and will fight for the right to produce and market our crop without government interference,” said ASA President Gerald Michaelson of Dawson, Minn. The association also requested that no target price be established for soybeans. “Our policy has always favored free enterprise,” said Michaelson. “If the target price or loan level were set too high, it would encourage production of competing products around the world. In addition, we are confident that we can gradually markets for primal-type meat cuts.” The MEF is seeking greater support among in dividuals, firms or associations active in livestock production, meat packing and processing and meat distribution.
