Compared with the previous
weeks close
Closing prices on
Slaughter Steers and Heifers
were mostly 50 cents higher
through midweek but closing
sales' were 25-50 cents lower.
Cows were 1.00-1.50 lower
and Bulls weak to 1.00 lower.
Four day receipts 16,300 as
compared 15,100 previous
week and 19,400 a year ago.
Trading on Fed Cattle was
fairly active under a good
demand through midweek
with the upturn in live prices
supported by a correspon
ding advance in carcass
prices; there was a good
early demand for cattle to be
slaughtered at points outside
the immediate Omaha area.
Late demand was quite
restricted, however, in
reflection of a liberal mid
week movement of live
cattle and Prime uneasy
concern over the stability of
carcass trading. Supplies
were only slightly larger
than the previous week and
were well distributed over
the trading period with a
liberal showing Choice
Steers and Heifers included.
One major packer returned
to Slaughter operations, but
another announced the
permanent closing of the
plant because of labor dif
ficulties. Slaughter Steers
made up approximately 36
per cent of the weeks total,
Heifers 32 per cent, cows 12
per cent and feeders 16 per
cent.
