EDUCATION IN TRINIDAD As I entered the primary school there was a whole group of children dressed in identical clothing. The “school uniforms” are required in all schools m Trinidad. Each has its own color or style of uniform so the residents can easily identify the children with the educational institution they attend. It gives the school some identity as well as a feeling of unity and pride. In many cases it is beneficial to parents because it saves on the expenses of school clothing. In the primary grades, the size and structure of the classroom varies greatly. In most cases the classes are large and the only separation between the classrooms are blackboard partitions. As I observed for the first time, I could not imagine ★High Quality Eggs Raelene Harbold how they could teach under these conditions, but as 1 watched for a while it was quite evident that it was being done successfully. The primary student begins school at age five. For two years they are in a class such as our kmdergarden. At seven they enter “standard one” which is equivalent to our first grade. They con tinue to “standard five” at which time they must take the “common entry” exam. This test is one of great importance because it Feeds? FEEDS Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Dec. 11,1976 determines the outcome of all further education. .If the test is passed, the child goes on to the Junior Secondary school. If he fails, he may not enter the Junior Secondary, and at this point he either must go to a private school and pay tuition or remain in the primary school for two more years. Most of these families cannot afford private schools so when the child has completed the post-primary years he again takes an exam. If he passes this one he is given a certificate and his mandatory education is finished. The need right now in Trinidad is for vocational schools for these children, since the certificate means very little when applying for jobs. The government has seen this need and has recently opened some vocational schools and is in the process of building others. Those students who pass the “common entry” test, however, enter the Junior Secondary school. This lasts for three years, from ages 12 -14. Again, at completion of these three , years the students must take an exam. The results of this exam ' determine which Senior Secondary school they will attend. Those who receive the highest grade will attend the same school, and so on down the line. Here again, is the need of specialized areas of teaching. At Senior Secondary school the children attend for two years and again they take an exam. These exams determine the amount of “0 level passes” they will receive. These are subjects the student has successfully completed. In other words if a student passes math, English, and history, he receives three 0 level oasses. Box 96 Marietta, PA 17547 See Us at Root’s Every Tuesday Night Building #5 The majority of children leave school at this point to find jobs. But the jobs are not readily available. Due to the large number of students and a small availability of jobs, the unemployment rate is quite high. Another problem is that employers are looking for people who have “A level passes.” These are the students who enter advanced level after the Senior Secondary school. At this point the student can study a specific area such as our commercial, academic or vo-ag courses. These are the ones who are the cream of the crop, so to speak. They have been able to stay on the top at all exam levels. How does all of this compare to our standard of education in the United States? The main feeling is that the student at elementary levels here in Trinidad is much ahead of those in the United States. The reason for this is that the main emphasis here is for the child to pass the common entry exams. Our educational system seems to put a stronger emphasis on the junior high and senior high school levels. Who can say which is best? In both cases the need for specialized training of teachers and pupils is becoming more and more necessary. Too often the emphasis on the importance of education is not strong enough and the children realize it too late. Only after they can’t find jobs do they become aware of the growing necessity of a good education. We must remember the school, school system, or the teacher cannot do everything. We must con tinually strive and work at improving ourselves.
