The Federal En vironmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently responsible for classifying pesticides. However, m light of the extension of this responsibility by the EPA, Pennsylvania will initiate the Pennsylvania Pesticide Control Act which includes certification of pesticide applicators who use restricted pesticides as required under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act fFIFRA). “At this time,” Kerstetter said, “we are proposing that in October, 1977, all currently EPA registered pesticides that bear a skull and crossbones symbol, with the words ‘Danger-Poison’, will be classified and con sidered restricted pesticides in the Commonwealth This means that individuals using or supervising the use of any pesticide product classified as restricted must become certified under the con ditions required by the Pennsylvania Pesticide Control Act. “In addition,” Kerstetter said, k “all pesticide outlets handling these products will be required to obtain a A. Sale of restricted pesticides will be made only to individuals with proper credentials to verify their certification.” The classification of pesticides as restricted in Pennsylvania will be superceded in the event further limitations are imposed as a result of EPA labeling requirements, Kerstetter noted. There are products currently m use which do not bear a skull and crossbones symbol which cannot be considered as general use pesticides since they have certain requirements which must be met before they can be used. These requirements appear on the labels. Information on pesticide applicator certification can be obtained by contacting the regional offices of the Department of Agriculture in Meadville, Williamsport, Tunkhannock, Gibsonia, Altoona, Summerdale and Lansdale.
