York DHIA honors top YORK, Pa. - In a spirit of friendly competition, three York County dairy herds are racing toward the goal of an 800 pound herd butterfat average. These and other top herds in the county were recognized at the annual DHIA banquet on November 23 at Avalong Farms Restaurant, York. The three herds which completed the testing year with over 700 pound averages were given awards. First place went to Sinking Spring Farms, York R 5, with an average of 20,151 pounds of milk and 792 pounds of butterfat. S. David Stewart, Delta Rl, finished second with records averaging 18,853 pounds of milk and 752 pounds of fat. Two of the winning farms also took home awards for other .accomplishments. The high individual 305-day lactation trophy went to S. David Stewart for an animal milking 27,972 pounds of milk and 1258 pounds of butterfat in the allotted days. Avalong Farms Inc., a Guernsey herd, was named most improved in butterfat average over 500 pounds, with an increase of 106 pounds over last year’s records. Another special award went to a cow well known, not only in York County, but across the country as a long' time show winner. Woodbine Ivanhoe Mollie, owned by George Knight, Jr., Airville R 2, won the trophy for high lifetime production. John Doll, Jr., Brodbecks Rl, was recognized for the most improvement in the 400-500 pounds bracket, with a jump of 75 pounds over his 1975 records. Three new directors were elected during the meeting. They are William Fantom, Delta Rl; Clair Myers, 3850 S. Salem Church Road, Dover; and George Knight 111, Airville R 2. The new directors will serve on the DHIA Board for three-year terms. E. Wayne Beshore, New Cumberland Rl, spoke briefly about the Penn sylvania Dairymen’s Association. He explained the purposes of the organization and encouraged the DHIA members to sign up for membership. Annual dues for the Association are $3. Beshore serves on the Board of Directors for the state dairy farm group. Rosette ribbons were presented to 14 other herds in the county who completed the test year with over 600 lb. of butterfat.
