Losses in milk production bite deeply into a dairyman’s profits, especially if these production slumps occur during the critical base-building period or in the early part of a cow’s lactation. Many things can contribute to these production slumps; improper feeding and sudden changes in feeding programs, poor herd health, and mastitis are a few of the major causes. Changes in feed prices and fluctuations in the feed-milk price ratios can also have drastic effects on profit. Manure handling is another great concern of dairymen because of its nutritive value to crops, the cost and in convenience of storing and handling it, and because of en vironmental regulations. The Dairy Day program focuses on these critical concerns. Donald Ace, Penn State dairy specialist will discuss “Feeding for Profit, Production and Health” and “Making Your Feeding Programs Work for You”. “Mastitis - Its Costs, Causes and Control” will be discussed by Dr. Lawrence Hutchinson, Penn State Extension vetenarian. An update on “Practical and New Manure Handling Ideas” and the new DER proposals will be presented by Gerald Bodman, Penn State Extension ag engineer. One of the highlights at each session will be a panel of local dairymen, a speaker or a tour on a topic of local interest.
