approximately 50 to 60 dif
ferent diseases which affect
the poultry industry. The last
area of judging involved the
selection and culling of five
laying hens and pullets.
After placing these birds,
oral reasons were given to
justify the placings of the
birds. Birds are placed on
size, quality, pigmentation of
comb and wattles, and
degree of bleaching in the
legs and beak.
This year the National
Poultry contest was made
possible by the support of
one of Lancaster County’s
fine industries. Victor F.
Weaver Poultry, Inc. of New
Holland is co-sponsoring the
contest. Weaver’s made
possible the travel, contest
expense, awards, and
awards breakfast for the
members competing in the
National Poultry Judging
contest.
In that contest the Penn
sylvania team received a
bronze, with Dennis Moore
receiving a silver medal, and
Harry Boley taking a bronze.
MILK QUALITY AND
DAIRY FOODS CONTEST
Pennsylvania fared well in
the National FFA Milk
Quality and Dairy Foods
Contest sponsored by the
Mid-America Dairymen,
Inc., of Springfield, Mo.
On the whole, Penn
sylvania placed 13th, ear
ning a silver medal. In
dividually, the members of
the team earned both silver
and bronze medals. Lamar
Groff and Hans Groff, both in
Lancaster Farming’s prime
coverage atea, received
silver medal.-, and the third
member of tne team, Dan
Brooks of Oxford, finished to
receive a bronze.
Participants m the Milk
Quality and Dairy Foods
Contest are given 10 samples
of cottage cheese and 10
samples of milk. Each of the
samples is visual and taste
tested to determine the
flavor, odor, and sediment
content of the samples.
Team evaluations of the
samples are written on score
sheets and compared to
>res determined by con
gest officials. The scoring is
done following standards
used by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture. Contestants
also identify samples of hard
cheeses, score sediment production as it relates to
pads, and take two tests milk quality,
