Alfalfa
processing
feasible
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Processing fresh alfalfa into
Pro-Xan, a USDA-developed
experimental high-protein,
feed supplement, shows
commercial possibilities,
according to a report
released by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s
Economic Research Service.
Pro-Xan is not commercially
available under a trademark
name. Investing in a Pro-
Xan facility would be an
alternative to building or
expanding a conventional
alfalfa dehydration plant.
Several methods have
been developed for
processing green-chop
alfalfa into valuable high
protein Pro-Xan granules
and a press cake with
roughage value. Simulated
initial investment costs for
plant construction and
harvesting and hauling
equipment needed to
produce Pro-Xan by these
methods ranged from $2.4
million to $3.0 million.
The annual rates of return
on investment for the
systems in operation also
were evaluated. They
ranged from 43 to 48 per
cent, depending on how the
alfalfa solubles were
disposed, the method of
handling the dehydrated
press cake, the length of the
operating season, and the
size or capacity of the plant.
These rates of return were
somewhat higher when
compared to the return that
might be expected from- an
alfalfa dehydration plant
operating for the same
length of season. The
higher dehydrated alfalfa
prices of recent months
would result in slightly
higher rates of return to an
investment in Pro-Xan since
the study estimates used 1974
and 1975 prices.

and slice apples and then dry the slices to store them through the winter
Of course the work went faster with extra hands and a little music after
