Pa. grain stocks down
HARRISBURG, Pa. -
Stocks of wheat, com, barley
and oats stored in Penn
sylvania on Oct. 1 were 17
per cent below a year ago
according to the Crop
Reporting Service. Of a total
near 35.8 million bushels,
farm stocks of 26.1 million
bushels were down 19 per
cent while off-farm holdings
of 9.6 million were 11 per
cent below October 1, 1975.
Wheat stocks of 8.6 million
bushels were one-fourth
below a year ago. Off-farm
stocks of 5.8 million were
down 23 per cent while farm
stocks at 2.8 million were
down 27 per cent.
Total com in storage of 8.3
million bushels was also
nearly one-fourth below 1975.
Although off-farm stocks of
2.1 million were up by nearly
three-quarters this was more
Dairy trophies honoring
Maryland natives
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Two new perpetual award
plaques honoring nationally
prominent Maryland leaders
on the rural youth and dairy
cattle scene who died during
1976 have recently been
awarded for the first time.
They are the J. Homer
Remsberg memorial trophy
and the Mylo S. Downey
memorial award. Both men
were College of Agriculture
graduates from the
University of Maryland at
College Park.
First winner of the
Remsberg trophy is Rebecca
Stiles, 16, of Littlestown, Pa.,
a resident of Carroll county,
Md. Her three-year-old
Jersey cow, Stilesrite Merry
Stranger, was named
supreme champion over all
breeds in the 4-H and FFA
dairy show at this year’s
Maryland State Fair in
Timonium.

winner of the Downey award

only one per cent down. Off
farm holdings of 1.3 million
bushels were up eight per
cent while farm stocks fell
two per cent to 13.9 million
bushels.
Total rye stocks of 254,000
bushels were 14 per cent
lower than last year.
Nationally, stocks of the
four feed grains (com, oats,
is the Maryland team which
won the national 4-H dairy
cattle judging contest on Oct.
4 during the North American
Dairy Show at Columbus,
Ohio.
The plaque honors Mylo S.
Downey, a former resident
of the Calvert Hills area in
College Park, who died after
a lengthy illness.
The plaque honoring him
was funded by memorial
bequests from former
professional associates,
including persons currently
working for the National 4-H
Service Committee in
Chicago, HI., the National 4-
H Foundation in Chevy
Chase, Md., and the Ex
tension Service of the U.S.,
Department of Agriculture
in Washington, D.C.
It is to be awarded an

The Remsberg memorial
trophy is named for the late
J. Homer Remsberg, fifth
generation owner of Locvale
Farms near Middletown.
Remsberg served 15 years
as president of the Maryland
Holstein-Friesian
Association and two years as
national president of the
Holstein-Friesian Associ
ation of America.
Other presidency terms

38 per cent greater than Oct.
1, 1974.
Rye stocks in all positions
on Oct. 1 totaled 15.4 million
bushels, two per cent less
than last year and 26 per cent
lower than 1974.

State park cabin
applications taken
HARRISBURG, Pa. - The
Department of En
vironmental Resources this
month issued a reminder
that applications for the use
of a state park cabin during
the Spring rental season wifi
be accepted from November
1 through December 15.
The Spring rental season
begins with the second
Friday in April and ends on
the first Saturday following
Memorial Day. The rental
period is from Monday to
Monday or from Friday to
Friday.
Reservations will 'be
awarded by lottery shortly
after the close of the ac
ceptance date and successful
applicants will be notified T>y
a confirmation letter.
Unsuccessful applicants will
also be notified.
While applications may be
submitted by out-of-state
residents, the Department
noted, Pennsylvania
residents are given
preference in reserving
cabins for the Spring and
Fall rental seasons.
There are available 146
family cabins at 11 state
parks as follows: Black
Moshannon, Philipsburg Rl,
13 cabins; Clear Creek, Sigel
Rl, 22 cabins; Cook Forest,
Box 120, Cooksburg, 23
cabins; Cowans Gap, Fort
Loudon, 10 cabins; Kooser,
