traffic.

No, those two men aren’t pushing that 110-ton 1
load into place at Pennsylvania Power & Light
Company's Susquehanna Steam Electric Station
near Berwick. The brute force comes from the big
Mack diesel tractor that is barely visible at the
other end of the 60-foot load. The operator, at the
right, is steering all 80 wheels of the special trailer,
while the mechanic at left is helping watch out for
trouble (or maybe potholes). Actually, the rig’s
close-quarter steering can be controlled from
either side, or its 10 axles can automatically follow
v where the tractor up front leads them during
normal highway travel. The rig's cargo is a pre
tubed section of the giant condenser system that
will be used to cool steam at the plant, which is,
'PP&L’s only nuclear-powered generating project.
The 1,050,000-kilowatt Unit 1 is scheduled for
service in 1980, and its twin, Unit 2, should go on
line in 1982.
