—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Oct 16. 1976 94 Professor recognized for work ROSEMONT, Dl. - Dairy Research Inc. (DRINC) recently presented its sixth annual award to Dr. Robert T. Marshall, professor of food science and nutrition at the University of Missouri. The presentation, made during the American Dairy Science Association’s (ADSA) annual meeting in North Carolina State University’s McKimmon Center, was for outstanding scientific contributions to the dairy industry. Award candidates must have five years in basic research on milk, milk components and-or milk products, the results of which are applicable to the solution of problems in the dairy industry. The winner, chosen by ADSA, receives a plaque and a $lOOO check. Dr. Marshall has established himself as a highly competent researcher in areas of dairy microbiology, dairy plant automation and cleaning, and mastitis control. Recognizing the rapid mid -1960’s trend to automated processing and cleaning in the dairy industry, he directed a major research effort to establish practical and reliable solutions to problems in this area. His work resulted in improved control of dairy plant processing operations through automation, im proved cleaning of milk handling equipment, control of wastes and improved efficiencies of energy and detergent utilization. When major innovations were made in the distribution pattern for dairy products, Dr. Marshall and his fellow researchers in tensified their research efforts to obtain basic knowledge on the behavior of psychrotrophic microor ganisms and their enzymes that were largely respon sible for spoilage of refrigerated mUk products. The knowledge gained from his work has been well documented in publications and papers.
