People of Trinidad The Trinidadian has been described as “Latin” in disposition,' “British” in character, and cosmopolitan in appearance. If I had to use just one word to describe the people of Trinidad, it would be “friendly.” I have received a warm welcome from everyone I’ve met and they have gone out of the way to make me feel welcome. The people who occupy the island of Trinidad represent many different cultures and races. A citizen of the country may have ancestors from China, East or West Africa, England, France, Spain, India or Pakistan. All these cultures are drawn together, living, working and playing in harmony. Harmony is indeed the right word. The word prejudice does not seem to exist in the vocabulary. We If you depend upon your milk check for a living, who’s minding your milk? Raelene Harbold can learn a lesson here, I’m sure. They look at each other as a person, not as a color or race. The qualities within are what count, not the outward appearance. Each culture has made its contribution to society. Village customs of old traditions are promoted to emphasize the different contributions made. Many of the names of towns, villages, and streets can be traced to the French or Spanish influence, while the songs, dance, and music are strongly African. The British influence can be seen in patterns of behavior such as the drinking of tea and driving on the left side of the road? Furthermore, the national sport is cricket and English is the language of the country. In spite of this, there is still a bit of a language problem. The people speak an ab breviated English using a lot of slang. They also speak quite rapidly.. In time, the ear adapts, and words that have different meanings to me, can be understood when put into the Trinidian con text. You can imagine, with so many different cultures, the country has a number of religions represented. When driving through Port-of- Spain one can see mosques, PROVIDENT BOOKSTORE 48TH ANNIVERSARY GREAT SAVINGS FOR YOU BEGIN YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING NOW! 4 CONVENIENT LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU EPHRATA - LANCASTER - NEW HOLLAND - PARK CITY Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Oct. 16,197& temples, and churches for almost any type of worship. The Indian has introduced the Moslem faith to Trinidad. They have just completed their celebration of the month of Ramadan. For one whole month they fast from sunrise to sunset and many hours are spent in prayer and meditation. The final day is called Eid-ul-fite. This is the end of the fast and the time of “spiritual regeneration.” Hindu temples are the place of worship for the people from Pakistan. Their celebration is held in November at a certain stage of the moon. It is called Divali, the festival of lights. V.J. Day is a Chinese celebration. It represents the victory over Japan in war and is celebrated on October 10th, or Ten-Ten. Along with these are the Christian holidays of the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and other denominations of the Protestants. Good Friday, Easter and Christmas are celebrated as we would know them. Workshop held MEDIA, Pa. - A sewing and craft workshop will be held for prospective 4-H Club leaders at the Toal Building, 2nd and Orange Streets, Media, on October 20 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. The workshop will present new ideas and techniques to make sewing more fun and creative for the beginner as well as the more advanced sewer. Greta Vairo, Ex tension home economist with the Pennsylvania State University in Delaware County says, “By combining the art of sewing with the fun of crafts, 4-H members can IS CELEBRATING ITS SAVE THROUGH-OUT THE STORE Now in progress thru Saturday, October 23rd BANK AMERICARD - MASTER CHARGE WELCOME Each one of these holidays has been recognized on the Trinidadian calendar. It would not be fair to give a national holiday only to those of Christian belief, and not give a holiday for the others. So each of these have been declared national holidays and are shared by everyone. In most cases they are celebrated with family and friends (whether of the same religion or not) just as we would celebrate our holidays. So the people have graciously accepted each other and each other’s ways, forming a country of unique compatability. They share the same country, com munities, schools, work, and even religious holidays. These people have their own life-style, different from what I’ve known. But I’ve learned not to compare. Being able to accept them on their level and way of life has proven to be a real learning experience. I’m thankful for your continued support, and the Lord’s guiding hand. leam to express their own ingenuity in doing ‘mini craft projects’, while they leam new sewing skills.” Adults and teens, who are interested in becoming 4-H leaders and starting clubs in their communities for young people, 8 to 19, are en couraged to attend October’s sewing and craft workshop.
