they know the answer "
So far, Lancaster County
doesn’t have intra-county
competition.
“We wanted to start up
competition in the county,
states Judy, “but, we
haven’t been able to get that
many people to go out for
teams.”
So far, the team that Judy
has quizzed on was fifth at
state competition one year,
and seventh this year. Judy
feels that this is an ac
complishment considering
that they were fifth the first
year they tried it.
Traveling to competition is
another example of an added
extra 4-H has given to Judy.
“I made so many friends
from 4-H,” she says. She has
traveled quite a bit in her
connections with the
organization. For instance,
she has been to 4-H State
Days, leadership school,

state horse show competition
at Harrisburg, and she’s
traveled around the area as
a member of County Council
“It's a great experience
meeting all those people,”
she says.
The state 4-H show in the
Harrisburg farm show arena
was also rewarding for
another reason - she did well
In Saddle Seat Equitation
she took 4th place. Saddle
Seat Equitation more-or-less
judges the nder - the way
they hold the reins, control
the horse, and hold their
legs, etc.
“The competition was
really tough up there,”
recalls Judy. “First, we
went through county com
petition, then districts, then
states.” To take a top
placing turned ‘ out to be
really rewarding for Judy
after all the work she had to
go through.

Judy says that her basic
attitude on winning has
altered in the past few years
“Competition used to be
unhealthy for me because all
I wanted was to win,” she
admits. “Now, I think I’ve
grown through the 4-H ex
perience to learn as long as I
do my best, that’s all that
matters - whether I take a
ribbon or not.”
This attitude was fostered
by a rather severe mishap
with her horse. He threw her
last Spring, which ended her
showing season pretty
quickly when she bad to go to
the hospital. During her stay
in the hospital, she un
derwent surgery and now
has metal plates in her arm
to prove it.
“When I came out, we
tried to sell the hcrse,”
explains Judy. “Un
