Lancaster Farming. Saturday. Oct. 2. 1976 100 Dairy supports raised WASHINGTON, DC - Secretary of Agriculture Earl I. Bull has announced that the support price for manufacturing milk will be increased to $8 26 per hundredweight on October 1,197 C This level of support is estimated to be 80 per cent of parity on this date The decision to increase the support price was made after a review of the dairy price support situation. On March 3, 1976, when the support price for manufacturing milk was set at $8.13 per hundredweight, effective April 1, it was an nounced that the support level would be subject to quarterly review and adjusted if necessary to assure an adequate supply of milk The support price of $8.13 per hundredweight was continued in the second quarter as a result of the quarterly review. The support price of $Bl3 was 80 per cent of parity on Apnl 1 and July 1, and the increase to $8.26 will assure that the support price for milk will reflect recent changes in the costs of feed, equipment, wages, energy, and other farm costs. The Secretary noted that the increase was necessary to protect the productive capacity of our nation’s dairy farmers, many of whom will have greater than normal costs of production this winter because they have been forced to feed their hay supply as a substitute for pasture during this year’s drought. The Secretary stated that the higher support will have only minimal effect on retail prices of milk and dairy products AUCTION WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 6 Starting at 4:30 P.M. Auctioneer: Merle Mishler because prices of most dairy products are already above the new support level. The price Commodity Credit Corporation will pay for butter will increase five cents and the price for Cheddar cheese will increase two cents in order to carry out the new level of support for milk. The purchase price for nonfat dry milk will not be changed. The purchase prices of butter and Cheddar cheese reflect the increase in the support level as well as an allowance to reflect increases in the manufacturing costs of all dairy products. Although the purchase price for nonfat dry milk was not changed, the increase in the purchase price of butter will defray the increased cost in the butter-nonfat dry milk operation resulting from improved packaging for nonfat dry milk which may result from new packaging specifications being developed.
