Cattlemen still
DENVER. Colo - The
nation's cattle industry has
been showing greater than
previously expected
progress in getting cattle
numbers, including the basic
cow herd, back into better
balance with beef demand,
the American National
Cattlemen’s Association
pointed out last week
ANCA cited recent U S
Department of Agriculture
data on cow slaughter and
the U S cattle inventory
which suggest that the cow
herd and total cattle num
bers as of Jan 1, 1977, will be
less than levels projected
earlier by most analysts.
“It is apparent that the
reduction phase of the cattle
cycle is continuing quite
rapidly,” said Wray Finney,
ANCA president. “The
relatively large slaughter of
cows and other cattle this
year has resulted in record
large beef supplies, com
pounding the already ex
tremely difficult price
problems: of cattle producers
and feeders. This also means
that the industry may ‘get
well’ sooner than many
persons expected.
“Meanwhile, although we
can see the light at the end of
the tunnel more clearly,

Economists with Cattle-
Fax, ANCA's market
analysis arm, said that the
most favorable indicator in
the latest government
figures was the report that
the cow herd as of July 1,
1976, was down seven per
cent from a year earlier, and
heifers for beef cow
replacement were down 12
percent The most bearish
price indicator was an in
crease of eight to 10 percent
in numbers of feeder cattle
(both inside and outside of
feedlots) over 500 lbs.
According to Cattle-Fax,
highlights of USDA’s July 1
inventory report included:
-The total cattle inventory,
at 133.5 million head, was
down five percent from a
year earlier - the lowest July
1 total since 1973.
-Cow slaughter during the
first half of the year totaled
an estimated 5.1 million head
- up 10 percent from 1975, and
nine percent more than
previously projected, (The
projections are monthly and
annual cow slaughter rates

million, or 10 percent more
than a year ago) and in
steers over 500 lbs. (18 7
million, up eight percent). In
part, this reflects the fact
that more cattlemen have
gone to stocker or cow-calf
stockcr operations, instead
of strictly cow-calf
operations. The figures also
reflect sharp increases in
numbers of cattle on feed
this year. When one removes
the cattle-on-feed factor,
numbers of feeder cattle
over 500 lbs. which are
outside feedlots are up four
percent from 1975.
-Numbers of calves under
500 pounds were 39.3 million,
down eight percent from a
year earlier. This reflects
continued heavy calf
slaughter and the reduced
calf crop - the smallest crop
since 1971. Calves born in
1976 are now estimated at
46.9 million head, down
seven percent from 1975. The
sharp calf crop reduction
results from poor calving
rates in some areas and the
likely inclusion of some bred
cows in the heavy first-half
cow kill.
