In a 1970 survey
representing 2.4 million
farm families, more than 80
percent of the families
reported off-farm income.
Their net cash earnings
totaled $26.2 billion. Net
income from farming, ex
cluding Government
payments, supplied $ll.l
billion. But the reremainder
came from earnings off the
farm.
Roughly 53 percent of the
families surveyed reported
earnings from wages and
salaries, which accounted
for nearly three-fifths of all
off-farm income.

As the nation’s largest
industry, agriculture’s needs
account for about 15 percent
of the total energy consumed
in this country. In trim,
American agriculture
creates more than $2OO
billion worth of food and
fiber per year. Much of this
ends up in the export
market, bringing back
almost enough dollars to pay
for our petroleum imports.
