Notebook
Sometimes it seems as
though everything happens
at the same time. The other
morning was an example of
this occurrence.
Off and on all night, our
one dog barked as the other
had broken her cham and
was running around the
buildings. Early in the
morning, I discovered her
sleeping with the puppy, who
was contented for a change,
and didn’t awaken us - the
silence did that. Then, before
breakfast was finished, we
saw our six pigs had broken
out of their pen and
discovered the apricot seeds
under the trees and were
busily crunching away on
them. After Philip got the

electric fence working, it
took us over half an hour to
get them chased into their
pen. Pigs can be the most
stubborn animals - so I’ve
discovered through the
years.
And to top off the morning
a neighbor, who picked up
Cmdy to babysit for her, told
us a heifer was out on the
road again. After repeatedly
jumping the fence, we finally
brought the whole bunch
home and put a younger
group into the upper
meadow.
Summer is the season for
family reunions. It is
traditional for folks to gather
from several states and
catch-up on activities. As
scattered families gather, it
seems the day turns into a
talking and eating
marathon. Such an array of
food - one can’t even sample
everything.
But the important thing is
keeping the ties strong that
bind a family together. As

we part, we realize that it is
more than just another
social event.
This year we’ve helped our
neighbors raise some ducks.
Although neither one of us
was entirely satisfied with
the conditions under which
this happened.
You see, our front porch
was open under the floor
boards and appeared to be
an ideal nesting area.
Eventually 31 ducklings
emerged with their mothers
and waddled to a small pond
in the meadow. All the traffic
across the cement walk
wasn’t exactly to our liking
and we had several drakes
sittmg in the yard too.
Now that they have hat
ched, I’ve finally put up the
poultry fencing which I
bought early in the spring
and never installed. Such a
bunch of frustrated ducks
you’ve never seen.
Historically, the income of
nonfarm families hovered
well above that of farm
residents. But during the
1960’s that income gap
narrowed, partly because
income from off-farm
sources increased. Between
1960 and 1970, net farm in
come grew 44 percent. But at
the same time, earnings
from off-farm sources shot
up 105 percent.

The event will start with
the judging of three classes
of Guernseys, with official

Pa. Route 272.
America’s farm and ranch
people have set production
records unmatched
anywhere in the world.
Today’s U.S. farm worker is
producing two-thirds more
per man-hour than in 1960,
and over six times as much
as in 1930.
