Chianina Field Day gives chance io learn breed
WRIGHTSVILLE - The
first Chianina Field Day to
be held in the Northeastern
Region, sponsored by the
regional section of the
American Chianina
Association, will be held at
Dutchman Cattle Breeding
Systems, Lauxmont Farms,
on Saturday, August 21.
Lauxmont Farms are
located in York County,
approximately two miles
South of Wrightsville on
Route 624.
The highlights of the day
will be the exhibition and
showing of project steers and
heifers by junior club
members. There will be
cash prizes for the steers
and heifer classes. Club
members are invited to
bring their steers and heifers
to Lauxmont Farms on the
preceeding Friday, in
preparation for showing.
There will be a beef bar-b
-que, featuring Chianina beef,
on Saturday, with tours of
the farm operations. In
addition to the 200-cow
Chianina herd, Dutchman
has a 400-cow Hereford herd
and over 300 acres of com.
There will be an exhibition
of Chianina cattle to be sold
at the November sth sale at
Lauxmont Farms in con
junction with the Eastern
National Livestock
Exhibition. Sale cattle will
be selected from cattle
brought to Lauxmont Farms
for the August 21st Field
Day.
The Dutchman Cattle
Breeding System Program is
based primarily on a herd of
200 one-half-blood Chianina
females. Visitors will be able
to see Chianina recorded
cattle which have been up
graded from several dif
ferent base breeds. Most of
the heifers have three
fourths Chianina calves by
side and visitors will be able
to appraise the growth and
quality of this breed.
On the sire’s side, the
Dutchman program is keyed
to using Lombard, their
purebred imported Lombard
is three years of age, and
weighs 2850 pounds. He is the
only purebred Chianina bull
in the Northeastern or New
England states.
According to Roa Kohr,
President of Dutchman
Cattle Breeding Systems,
they are looking forward to
the Field Day, because there
are still many cattle
producers and farmers who
are not familiar with the
Chianina breed. “We have
really been impressed with
the growth rate, structural
soundness, and maternal
ability of the Chianina in our
program,” stated Kohr.
Additional information
concerning the Field Day
can be obtained from Mr.
Jim Glass, 230 Harrison
Avenue, Glenside, Pa. 19038,
the president of the NE
Regional Chianina
Association.
