They have adopted a policy of feeding their people better, and I think we ought to support that kind of policy m Russia and other countries.” loanes said the size of the U.S. foreign gram trade tripled in the early 70’s with the dropping of barriers between the U.S. and Russia, China, and Eastern European countries. He said he didn’t think we should go back to the days when we weren’t trading. He said he was also glad to see the government out of the gram business. In years past, government programs had idled some 40 million acres of productive farm land. With the end of government storage and subsidy programs, farmers have put most of those acres back into use, loanes said. Exports, he said, are expected to hit 1.7 billion bushels, which includes a 450 million bushel sale to the USSR. “The plain fact is'that gram exports have been exploding, not just for Russia, but for the whole world.” Livestock operations throughout the world are growing rapidly, he said, increasing the demand for American feed grams. Europe is becoming a bigger customer every year. Bolstered by this growing demand, loanes said com prices on Chicago markets would likely remain on a plateau of $3.25 to $3.50 per bushel for most of 1976.
