Lehigh 4-H’ers
rack up awards
READING - Lehigh Valley
4-H members took 31 beef
and sheep competition prizes
at the Reading Fair recently.
Sarah Fretz took top honors
with 17 out of the 31. In the
beef events, Miss Fretz’s
entries took third in heavy
medium weight and second
in intermediate
showmanship.
In sheep judging, her
entries won first and fourth
in aged Hampshire lamb;
first in yearling lamb; first,
third, and fourth in ewe
lambs and pair of lambs;
first and second in Hamp
shire market lamb; fifth in
intermediate sheep
showmanship; and reserve
champion in sheep blocking.
Entries by Melissa Fretz,
Zionsville Rl, won second
place in heavy-medium beef
competition; first in junior
beef showmanship; third in
Hampshire market lamb;
and second in intermediate
sheep showmanship.
Other beef judging win
ners were entries by Carol
Krause of Slatington Rl, who
took first in heavy-heavy
steer and Grand Champion
of show. Her sister, Diane
Krause, took second in
heavy-heavy steer and first
in intermediate
showmanship. Grant Grim
of Breimgsville Rl, took
third in heavy-heavy weight,
first in medium
heavyweight, reserve and
grand champion, and second
in senior showmanship.
Entries by Ralph Danner
of East Texas took fifth in
light-medium and third in
junior showmanship for
beef.
In sheep judging, Joshua
Grim’s entries placed first in
Dorset market lamb and
fifth in juior showmanship.

H members attended Penn
sylvania 4-H Leadership
Congress, June 21-24 on the

Bitler wins DeKalb award
ELVERSON - The awards
assembly for Twin Valley
High Seniors was held last
month. During the assembly
the 1976 DeKalb Agricultural
Award was given to Harvey
Bitler. This award is
presented to the senior
vocational agriculture
student who has demon
strated the most outstanding
development in the areas of
citizenship, leadership, and
occupational experience
program.
During his first year in Vo-
Ag he participated in the
Berks County land judging
contest, Berks County public
speaking contest and placed
second in the County
Greenhand quiz contest. In
10th grade Harvey was
accepted for Vo-Tech. As a
junior he again participated
in the county public speaking
contest and received the
Chapter degree, and was
elected viflp-president of

Projects are an important
consideration in selection the
winner of this award and the
recipient has had several
successful ones. In ninth
grade he had field corn, oats,
hay, steers and veal calves.
In eleventh and twelfth
grade Harvey had field com,
sweet com and tomatoes.
He plans to continue
farming in the future ex
panding his operations to
include swine breeding and
fattening, and expanding his
acreage of crops. As DeKalb
Award winner, Harvey’s
