If you decide you’ll just “grab a quick lunch somewhere” each working day of the year, you could be spending between $590 and $1,062 a year - that doesn’t count tips and taxes. Even modest restaurant lunches at $2.50 a working day bring your lunch costs to near the $6OO mark. You also may be getting more calories than you bargained for. Botulism [Continued from Page 5S| cloudy scales or white deposits on the inside because very heat resistant forms of bacteria can be burned under them and later cause food spoilage. If these deposits are difficult to remove, apply undiluted vinegar to the inside surface. After two or three hours, scrub the inside of the jar with a stiff brush or scouring pad. With the proper use and care, canning jars can be a long term investment if you use them each year. The two-piece metal lid is the kind recommended for home canning. This self sealing lid offers the greatest assurance of obtaining good seals and preventing spoilage by re contamination. The flat metal lid can only be used once, but the screw bands can be reused. Don’t try to use lids from commercial type jars. Foods may not seal properly, and spoilage is likely to occur. Be sure to check the directions on the lid box for lid preparation. The different brands have different in structions, and you might have sealing problems if the directions are not followed. You should also save the lid box until all lids have sealed, in case you need to contact the manufacturer. This You Heard? By Doris Thomas French fries and a milk shake is about 1,150 calories. Good planning may be the answer to the morning “I don’t feel like making lunch right now” tendency. Planning ahead really pays in both money and calories' saved. Making your lunch the night before, when the dinner leftovers are handy and the kitchen is already in use, is the most efficient use of your time. By packing after dinner, you avoid the job of storing the leftovers in dishes which then have to be pack your lunch. Leftovers provide a substitute for the sandwich so many people find boring day after day. Try a “finger salad” of carrot sticks, green pepper would aid them in locating inferior batches of lids. If you are doing canning this summer, use the modem 'method and recommended equipment so botulism will not be a risk, and time, money and food will not be wasted due to food spoilage. For a modem processing time table you can request the Penn State Circular No. 561 “Canning Fruits and Vegetables” from the York County Extension-Service in the Court House/ slivers, cauliflower sticks, and cottage cheese. As another possibility, try apple slices with slices of Cheddar cheese or peanut butter or an “applewich.” Or just pack a pear along with a wedge of blue cheese and some crisp bread. . You can also save money on beverages you drink while on the job. For example, you can save up to 20 cents a cup for coffee or tea if you bring your own makings and boil the water at work. Perhaps you use an immersion coil or join with your coworkers in buying a small heating unit. HOW TO REPLACE FUSES CONVENIENTLY Sooner or later, every home with electricity is bound to have a blown fuse or thrown circuit breaker. To save time when you have trouble, I would like to suggest that you label all the circuits in a fusebox as to what they serve. To do so, disconnect cir cuits one at a time by removing the fuse or swit ching off the circuit breaker and check to see what doesn’t work. Operate the switches and plug in a portable lamp around the house. If you can’t find space to label directly on the box, number each fuse and put the listing on a sheet of paper inside the door of the fusebox. Then, when the power is off in part of the -wiring, system, you can quickly' find which fuse or circuit breaker is involved. The circuit protection you find in the fusebox may be cartridge fuses, screw-in fuses dr. circuit breakers. Fuses must be replaced when they blow, but when a circuit breaker trips you need only put it all the way to the off position, and then back on to restore service. It’s a good idea to disconnect all appliances from the circuit before doing this, or it will probably trip the breaker or blow the fuse again. If you’ve disconnected all equipment and'it happens again, the trouble is likely in the wiring and you should call an electrician. *R Send the Coupon to me To: Rangier Red 6 N.
