—Lancaster farming, Saturday, June 26, 1976 76 Every morning about the time that the first rays of the sun had sparked life into the birds in the trees, and the chickens began cackling and scratching he was there. Usually the dew was still hanging in small droplets on the leaves of his plants, and the air was cool and refreshing. This was the"way he liked it. A retired coal miner, with a history of heart ailments, Mr. Baldwin, our neighbor, spent every morning in his garden. He carefully weeded, hoed, and even inspected many of the plants making sure that none Jiad become infected disease or parasites. His efforts and devotion showed, too, because every year he had the nicest garden in the neighborhood. There wasn’t a weed anywhere. Neat rows of peas, cabbages, onions, beans, carrots and most anything else stood erect and proud, as though they knew their, master loved them. And probably they did. Occasionally he’d pull out a hand kerchief and wipe the moisture from -his brow, the way Louis Armstrong Tused to do during his performances. Only here, surrounded by corn fields and pastures, there was no roar of applause just the pleasant sounds of chirping crickets, singing birds, cackling hens and a crowing rooster. Along the edges and bordering the road were hundreds of flowers. These, too, were taken care of with pride and love.
