A 1972 graduate of
Elizabethtown High School,
Raelene resigned from her
job as dental assistant to Dr.
Werner Z. Fetter in early
June and is now preparing
herself for the trip.
She decided to apply to be
an IFYE when she felt she
had reached a noint “where I
really needed a change. I
look at this opportunity as a
step to getting back into the
agriculture field,”
Raelene, the daughter of
Mr., and Mrs. Ray Harbold,
Elizabethtown, was raised
on a dairy farm arid spent
ten active years as a 4-H’er
in Lancaster County. The
IFYE program is sponsored
by the National 4-H Foun
dation in Washington, D.C.

for ‘someday’ most likely
you don’t get it done,” she

Raelene said' she is
especially looking forward to
meeting the seven IFYE’s
who will travel to Pakistan
with her. They come from all
over the United States. “It’s
seems funny to go abroad
and not have traveled the
United States, but this will be
one way of learning about
our country.”

the size of California and has
70 million people, 96 percent
of whom are of the Muslim
religion. The official
language is Urdu, With
English the - second
language. But, she says,
there are five other
languages used. Right now,
she’s wondering where she
might find an Urdu language
book.
When she first applied for
the program she said, “I was
thinking of going to Europe,
but the more I thought about
it the more I realized that
Europe is really not much
different. So I prepared
myself to get a different
assignment.’^
“Going to this part of the
world I will probably leam a
lot more. It will be quite
different than if I went to a
more familiar country. I’m
really looking forward to it.”
She added thoughtfully, “A
more similar country would
not have challenged me as
much. And I’m sure it will

Another aspect of the
IF YE program she finds
appealing is that she will
actually live with families in
Pakistan. She said, “I will
leam to know what the
country is like rather than
traveling as a tourist. I will
get to see areas quite dif
ferent from what a tourist
sees.”
The National 4-H Foun
dation has sent her in
formation and reading lists -
about the country and things
to help her leam about this
country and herself, and to
adjust to cultural dif
ferences. She said that even

though she isn’t much in
terested in politics, she’s
trying to keep up with
election news, since the
election will take place while
she’s there.
She has learned that the
chief products in Pakistan
are rice, tfheat, and cotton.
“People eat a lot of rice in
rural areas -1 guess I will get
used to it.”
Raelene feels confident
that meeting the families
will not be a big problem. In
4-H she participated on the
dairy judging team and
traveled to the national
contest in Ohio where she
