Sewing winners
named
HARRISBURG - A three
piece woman’s ensemble
made by Mrs. Luther Car
nes, of Duncannon Rl, Perry
County, won top honors in
the 1976 Pennsylvania State
Grange sewing contest.
The competition drew a
total of 2,848 entries, one
more than last year’s record
total, according to Mrs.
Leroy Hoover of Roaring
Spring, chairman of
women’s activities for the
State Grange.
Mrs. Carnes’ outfit - a
lavender skirt and blouse,
with a color coordinated
striped, button jacket - was
awarded the best-of-show
honor after taking the first
place ribbon in Class A
competition. The class was
for contestants 18 years and
over who made garments for
the same age group.
Other first place winners
were:
Mary Ann Dinkins, 16-
years-old, of 535 Rial Lane,
Greensburg, Westmoreland
County, in Class B. (Gar
ments for 10-to-17 year olds
made by contestants in the
same age group.)
Miss Mildred Kirkner, 3
Lizbeth Lane, Berwyn,
Chester County, in Class C.
(Garments for children
under 18 made by con
testants 18 years of age and
older.)
Mrs. Daniel Bauman, 619
North St., Berlin, Somerset
County, in Class D. (Men’s
garments.)
Miss Dinkins’ winning
entry was a girl’s three-pi ace
ensemble of brown corduroy
slacks with a shirt-blouse of
bold brown, white and yellow
checks, and a yellow dress
that can be worn separately.
In Class C, Miss Kirkner’s
winner was a Holly Hobby
flowered dress with a full
white lace-trimmed apron
made for her cousin’s nine
month old daughter. Mrs.
Bauman won with a rust
colored man’s suit made for
her husband.
The four winning entries
will be sent to New York for
judging June 7 in the
National Grange com
petition, Mrs. Hoover said.
Second and third place
award winners in the state
contest were:
Class A - Second, Mrs.
Frances M. Smith, Orefield
RD 1; third, Virginia M.
Hertzog, Fleetwood RD 1.
