United Egg Producers
approve market co-op
In a special conference
telephone meeting May 6th
the U.E.P. Board of
Directors unanimously
endorsed the organization of
an egg marketing
cooperative to market and
bargain for prices of
member eggs in a
designated area of the
United States.
Jim Rich, U.E.P.
President, hailed the
unanimous action by the
Board as a “milestone for
U.E.P. members and the
egg industry.” The action
gives total support of U.E.P.
member cooperatives to the
formation and operation of
the cartoned-egg bargaining
program which was
discussed and approved in
the Southeast last week.
Rich quoted the official
motion as follows: “U.E.P.

an egg marketing
cooperative to be affiliated
with U.E.P. through U.E.P.
and regional participation on
the Board of Directors and
Executive Committee of
such cooperative.” The
cooperative will be
organized under the Capper-
Volstead Act and the co-op
laws of the State of North
Carolina. Offices will be in
Charlotte, N.C., with
Maurice Pickier as its
Managing Director.
Under the proposed
marketing plan, individual
egg producers who are
members of any one of the
U.E.P. regional members
may participate in the
cooperative by assigning to
the program eggs which go
into the designated market
area. Membership fees and a
marketing fee will also be
required. Members will be

guaranteed at least their
normal sales price, less
commissions, as the
program gets under way.
According to Pickier, the
cooperative’s objectives
include; 1) to stop premium
erosion on cartoned and nest
run eggs; 2) to restore
correct pricing relationships
between market quotations
and actual prices received
for members’ eggs sold in
both carton and nest run
form; 3) to sell members’
eggs for the highest price
consistent with supply and
demand; 4) to establish a
uniform credit policy; and 5)
to spread the risk of
bargaining over a broad
base.
Pickier said he is currently
visiting egg producers who
have indicated an interest to
participate. He said sign-ups
in the program must be on a
