According to informal reports presented at that meeting, and a report which was obtained from California, supplies of fresh peaches should be adequate this year without being burdensome, McPherson said. In the Southeast, Georgia seems to have the best crop of peaches. In fact, trees were reported to be so heavily loaded with im mature fruit that some or chards had been thinned twice to assure proper size THERE’S A FETTER THAT’S BETTER FOR YOUR Compact Mini-Diesels Ranging from 11/2H.P.to2OHP.l 1 /2H.P.to20HP. Some producing areas had been hurt in both North Carolina and South Carolina, but there were still expected to be reasonable crops of peaches from both states. Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia are'all reported to have peaches despite highly variable temperatures which occured during the bloom period. Most of those areas are now watching fruit development closely, as there are possibilities that the full effects of the bad weather may not show until late May in some places. Pennsylvania also went through a period of bad weather when peaches were in bloom, but there is still fruit on the trees. There have been reports that apples may have suffered more damage than peaches in some parts of the Pennsylvania fruit producing area. New Jersey peach producers expect to have about two-thirds of a full crop over the state. In Atlantic and Camden counties this will mean a significant drop from last year, but there will still be an estimated 2.5-million bushels of peaches in that area. Gloucester County will have about the same volume of peaches as last year, though more peaches will be available at the beginning and end of the season than during the middle period. New Jersey’s peach volume should peak about July 25. Peaches have been damaged in central Illinois, but there appears to be a full crop of peaches in the southern part of the state, which is the main producing area. A report given at the NPC Executive Committee meeting was that Illinois probably had 75 to 80 percent of a crop at that time. Missouri apparently has escaped damage and should have a full crop. There were no reports available from Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas. Indiana’s peaches suffered extensive damage from cold in the state’s northern growing areas, according to reports. Peaches in Michigan have been hurt but apparently not wiped out. Peaches north of Grand Rapids apparently came through recent spells of bad weather in par ticularly good shape. Maryland, Delaware and Virginia still have prospects for peach crops this year, but all three states suffered from severe variations in weather while the trees were in full bloom. Peaches may have been hurt some in West Virginia, but growers are still waiting to leam what happens to the immature fruit during the remainder of this month. Colorado is expecting to have about 225,000 bushels of peaches from its Western Slope production area after suffering some loss from a recent cold spell. California, the nation’s major fruit and vegetable producer, is expecting to have a total fresh market peach crop of more than 9,655,000 packages, an in crease of more than half a million lugs over last year. Nearly 1,000,000 packages of nectarines are also expected to be produced and shipped in California this year. The market for canning peaches is reported to be down in California this year, which would push more fruit into fresh market channels, but higher demand from the freezers may tend to level the amount moving into the fresh market. California fruit producers carry on aggressive promotion and marketing program with funds raised under state and Federal marketing orders.
