PA 17325 Life at grist mill was tough disappeared from this small village. “Graysvdle used to be a busy place,’” Woomer said, starting towards the site of his old business. “We had a general store, a tin shop, a shoe'repair shop, office, three blacksmiths, my mill, and an ore mine and furnace. I can remember the mules hauling ore and men pouring metal,” the old timer reminisced. Owning and operating a mill wasn't just hard on a man’s back, according to Woomer. It was also aggravating at times as muskrats and crabs chewed holed in the dam - making the source of power become less efficient. Then there were also “cog-gear playouts,” and one problem which is still around at even the most modem mills - bad debts. Changing the subject briefly to his recollections of farm life, Woomer said he used to keep 10 or 12 cows ■®l .Telephone, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 15.1976 — and was one of the first farmers in Spruce Creek Valley to purchase milking machines. That was in the mid 1920’5. Those were “the good old days” for E. K. Woomer. Like the old mill, the blacksmith shop, and general store - they’re gone. But they’re fondly recollected by Woomer and others his age.
