Livestock vaccines and
other veterinary biologies
are supposed to work. If they
don’t the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) wants
to know why not.
There’s good reason for
concern - by you and USDA -
if any licensed vaccine,
bacterin, antitoxin, serum or
related product fails to
perform. Few products have
been tested as thoroughly as
the veterinary biologies
licensed by USDA’s Animal
and Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS). Few
manufacturers are inspected
as closely as USDA-licensed
biologies laboratories.
The Virus-Serum-Toxin
Act of 1913 requires all
veterinary biologies in in
terstate trade to be licensed
by USDA and to be pure,
safe, potent and effective.
Licensing and inspection
procedures keep producers
and their products up to the
mark - requiring high
standards of sanitation,
exact records, uniform
production procedures, and
sampling and testing of
every production lot. Even
the labels and instructions
for use must meet USDA
approval.
Even so, you may not
always get the results that
are indicated. First, be sure
you followed the directions
exactly. Be sure your
needles and equipment were
clean. But if you believe a
biological product failed to
perform, if it produced
unexpected results or ad
verse side effects, notify
your area office for APHIS
Veterinary Services, USDA.
