—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. May 1, 1976 58 Burglar-proofing home is good security measure By MELISSA PIPER YORK - Just because your grandfather left his house door unlocked and your father followed suit, it doesn’t mean that such a lade of security is the route to take today, according to Trooper John Scutta, of the Pa. State Police. , Delivering his remarks at the Spring Homemaker’s meeting held here on Wednesday, Scutta promp ted the audience to think twice about even the most elementary forms' of security. “We are faced with the element called victim contribution in each case of burglary,” Scutta stated, “this is what could have been done to promote security but was left unattended.” Scutta told the audience that a good means of seeing how a burglar could get inside your own home is to lock yourself outside - preferably when someone has a key or is expected home soon. If you find a method for getting inside, then you know that a burglar could do the same with little effort. “The important aspect of security in a home is to always create the im pression that someone is home,” Scutta noted. “This can be done by having timing devices on lights, tape recorded sounds and by not allowing unsolicited mail to pile up around doorways or mailboxes.” Scutta warned the homeowners that entering a house or building when signs of forced entry are in evidence is a poor decision. “Get to a phone and call police but do not attempt to use your imagination to catch a burglar in the midst, of his work,” he chided. The trooper explained that a good indicator of home burglaries was to take an old purse and lay it on a piece of furniture which could be seen from opening the front door a crack. If you come home and the purse has been moved in any way, it could very well mean that someone has intruded into your home. In this case, again call the police before entering. Unfortunately, many people advertise when they will be gone and burglars often have an easy method of determining the homes to hit. By mention of social news, marriage plans and funerals, professional robbers can disern when homes will be vacant. In this case it is wise to have someone look after the house. Although no home is en tirely burglar proof, Scutte advised making entry harder for professionals. “The burglar is often sneaky and lazy - if it is harder for him to get into the home he’ll think twice about creating noise and attention.” Scutta explained that doable locks and extra security measures could benefit in these in stances. “For doors, locks at the top and bottom often are good and placing a broomstick inside the track of a sliding glass door will prohibit entry as easily,” he added. Scutta told homemakers that giving out keys was a poor practice and one to be avoided. When Trooper John Scutta having a car serviced at a gas station the best thing to do is, to give only the keys needed for the ignition and the trunk. “Never give your whole key case as it is a means of having keys copied and sold to burglars,” he stated. IH aids Downtime during planting season can be costly. It can be frustrating too if the breakdown occurs on a weekend when a key part or service is unavailable. To deal with this problem, one agricultural equipment company is encouraging its dealers to provide an emergency parts and service on weekends during normal non-business hours. International Harvester calls it Stand By 7. Dealers are being asked to par ticipate on Saturdays and Sundays especially during critical planting and har vesting seasons. When a customer needs a part on a weekend, IH of ficials say, he will contact his participating IH dealer. If the dealer doesn’t have the part, he will utilize the IH parts network to secure it. Essentially, the dealer will telephone IH’s central parts depot at Broadview, 111. If an inventory check fails to locate it, Broadview per sonnel will check with one of the regional parts depots. If still unsuccesful, Broadview will contact the IH plant m Instant Replay In case of a lost -purse, Scutta advised the women to not accept telephone calls telling them to come to a location in order to retreive the purse. “Verify the call by calling back the person or store before you leave, a burglar who has found the purse may easily enter and steal while you are gone.” Scutta noted that the large majority of robberies are committed by juveniles and statistics often reflect that a very small percentage are caught. the In a time when crime seems to have reached out from the cities into the suburbs and even the country, extra security measures are needed for protection. Good common sense in locking doors and windows and having neigh* bors watch an empty house are advisable for more security. The Pa. State. Police will soon have engraving tools for use in marking valuables and Scutta advised con tacting the office for the loan of such. The trooper is also hoping to have accompaning tapes placed on home win dows where the valuables have been so engraved. farmers where the part was made to secure it and get the part to the dealer. “With Stand By 7, any part available from IH on a weekday is available just as fast on Saturday or Sunday, too,” "according to IH of ficiate. On Saturdays, par ticipating dealers are being asked to remain until 7 p.m. to provide emergency parts and service to equipment users and not close as usual at noon. On Sundays, par ticipating dealers may open their doors or provide customers a number to call in the event of a breakdown. Hours may'vary from dealer to dealer. IH representatives also will be available on weekends during non business hours to advise dealers on service problems. The emergency parts and service program began April 17 and is to run through November for most parts of the country. - Kennard-Dale FFA ’ers win procedure contest The Kennard-Dale FFA Members of fhe winning George Knight, Jr., Airviile, Parliamentary Procedure, team are Tim Sizemore, son Jeff Griffith son of Mr. and Team captured first place in~ of Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Mrs. Owen Griffith, Delta, the York County FFA Sizemore, Fawn Grove, Robin Wales, daughter of Parliamentary Procedure Brad Sizemore, son of Mrs. Mr. and Mrs. Milford Wales, Contest held recently at Red Nora Sizemore, Delta, Paul Fawn Gove, Dean Miller, Lion High School. Being without being In grandmother’s day, spring was called housecleaning time. Today, many of us might call it pound-shedding time. This is the time of year we begin to realize that bathing suits and sleeveless dresses are not about to cover those extra pounds that somehow crept on during the winter season. So you’re dieting. So, what's new? It sterns that almost everybody’s doing it and just about everybody’s complaining. Some of the most sensible suggestions on dieting have come from the Scott Paper Company’s Home Service Center. They point out that with almost as many diet books as there are cookbooks on the market, it .would be foolhardy to suggest a diet suitable for everyone. But here’s a formula for weight loss to keep in mind: intake 1800 calories, output 2400 calories result happiness; intake 2400 calories, output 1800 calories result misery, Successful dieting is a combination of physiology and psychology. Only your doctor can specify the correct diet for your physiology, and it's wise to talk to your doctor before beginning. The psychology comes in by having the willingness, and the will power to begin the diet, and then by making it such a pleasurable experience that it will be fun to continue it. With the variety of foods available in today’s supermarket, your doctor will have no difficulty specifying foods you really Know Where the Activiti Read the Farm Women slim What applies to dressing up the food also applies to dressing up the table.
