Del 302-674-2207 prepared by the En vironmental Protection Agency’s Community Health and Environmental Sur veillance System (CHESS) is the basis for sulfur dioxide controls on power plants. Saying “it’s a scientific Watergate,” Miller cited a Los Angeles Times story that concluded “reports from a major EPA research program were systematically distorted in an effort to prove that pollution from sulfur bearing fuels had an adverse effect on public health.” The consequences of this report for a coal producing state like Pennsylvania are enormous, he said. It could deprive our miners of jobs and force consumers here to pay millions of dollars for scrubber controls when they didn’t have to. It could seriously affect our generation of electric power in Pennsylvania - 80 percent of which comes from coal, be said. “Environmentalism is no fad and I’m for dean air,’’ said Miller. “But why should the users, of electric power, who are already paying bigger bills, be socked with much bigger ones,” he safd.
