look, she advised, “look
in your closet, take the skirt,
make a vest, add a blouse; or
take that skirt and add a T
shirt or tunic.” She em
phasized the fact that women
are no longer being dictated
to as far as fashion is con
cerned, pointing out that in
regards to style, length, etc.,
“today anything goes.” She
mentioned, however, that in
home sewing, innerfacing is
important in the proper
construction of a garment.
Suggesting that the ladies
consider for example, the
foundation of a building, she
.pointed out that if a solid
foundation is not there, “it
will fall apart and it’s the
same with a garment.”
Demonstrating with samples
of clothing and accessories,
she went on to illustrate how
the new fusible innerfadngs
(different from the old iron
ons by the fact that they are
applied with heat, steam and
pressure) are properly
applied, accomplishing a
finished, professional look.
In addition to showing how
the innerfadngs are used in
traditionally innerfaced
garment sections, her
demonstration included
some less well-known uses
such as reinforcing a fly
front on slacks to prevent
puckering, applying laces
and appliques without the
need for top stitching; and
adding body without af
fecting the stretchability of
kbit, U-neck shirt openings.
Before ending her talk,
Rebecca invited the ladies to
come up during the break

Mrs. Carol Bressler,
vocalist, and Ms. Beverly
Perella, pianist. Their
program included a
Bicentennial composition of
folk, country western,
spiritual and patriotic songs.
During lunch the ladies
were treated to a show of
spring fashions courtesy of
John Wanamakers depart
ment store, after which Mrs.
Fay B. Strickler, home
economist of the Berks
County -Cooperative Ex
tension Service, addressed
the group, commenting that
it was the largest crowd ever
for a Spring Homemakers
Day since she has been
serving in the County. .
As part of the afternoon
program, Mrs. Rebecca
Buckwalter spoke to die
group on herbcraft. Relating
her subject to the Bicen
tennial theme, she pointed
out that early American
colonists learned much
about herbs from the Indians
who used as many as 59
drugs .made from herbs.
Mrs. Buckwalter owns and
operates a shop called
“Herbcraft” which is
located in Lancaster.
Wrapping up Wednesday’s
program was Dr. Dorthea
Kleppinger, a clinician at
Planned Parenthood Center
of Berks County, who
outlined a technique which
has been used in Germany
for the past 30 years to
diagnose problems of the
liver, spleen, gall bladder
and other body parts in the
abdomen area but which is

Seedlings offered for
sale in Chester Co.
Arbor Day is recognized as
the day to plant trees. The
day was originated to foster
interest in forest preser
vation and to reforest wasted
land. This year Arbor Day
was celebrated April 30.
On the two days following,
the Chester County Con
servation District, due to the
great response by area
residents, will repeat the
Tree Seedling Sale held April
24, last week.
As long as supplies hold
out, seedlings will be sold at
the Downingtown Farmer’s
Market during regular
bsuiness hours on April 30
and May 1, which are 12 noon
to.lo p.m. on Friday and 10
a.m. until sold out on
Saturday.
The Chester County
