“The same people who tell
me all politicians are
crooked tell me they aren’t
going to bother voting this
year because their votes
won’t mean anything. But I
tell them the only way to
change things is to get out
-and vote. And I tell them I’m
trying to change things by
running for office.”
Boyd is a candidate for the
Republican nomination to
the 16th U.S. Congressional
District seat now held by
Rep. Edwin D. Eshelman.
The dinner rally was the
fourth in a series of five such

“A lot of people have been
disillusioned by the
American political process.
Too many of them think that
all the moral force has
seeped out of that process,”
Boyd continued.
“I, too, feel there is cause
for concern. I believe that we
are going through a moral
and spiritual crisis in
America. It’s a crisis that
touches more than politics. It
touches every one of us in
every walk of life.
“Morality is a thing that
cannot be legislated, though.
It is a thing that has to come
from the spiritual
wellsprings of the American
people. We must see that
those wellsprings continue to
flow.
“We need effective moral
leadership in America. Not
just in politics. Not just in
religion. But in every
segment of our society. We

A particular challenge
exists with young' people,
Boyd continued. He said
local, state and national
political leaders must
convince young people
through their deeds as well
as their words that govern
ment can still be responsive
and responsible.
“It’s up to all of us to in
volve more young people in
the democratic process,” he
concluded.

Hog shipments eased
HARRISBURG - A
modification of an embargo
against New Jersey swine
because Of hog cholera has
been signed by Pennsylvania
Agriculture Secretary
Raymond J. Kerstetter
effective last Tuesday.
This latest modification
permits the movements of
all types of swine from
nonquarantined counties into
Pennsylvania without a
permit.
The Pennsylvania
Agriculture Department
clamped an embargo on New
Jersey swine Feb. 28 and on
swine from Massachusetts
and Rhode Island March 1,
the dates on which outbreaks
of hog cholera had been
reported. The embargo
against the three states was
modified March 18 to permit
the movement of swine from
nonquarantined counties
direct to slaughterhouses
without permits.

Agriculture Department’s
Bureau of Animal Industry,
said the embargo against
New Jersey was further
modified to permit the
movement of breeding and
feeder as well as market
ready swine to Pennsylvania
after a federal quarantine
was lifted from two of four
affected counties in New
Jersey.
The quarantine was lifted
from Salem County, N.J.,
April 5 and Burlington
County today. A quarantine
is still in effect in Gloucester
and Camden Counties, N.J.,
as well as parts of
Massachusetts and all of
Rhode Island. Under these
quarantines, swine may be
moved to slaughter only
under a permit from state or
federal animal health of
ficials.
Hog cholera is highly in
fectious and often fatal to
swine. The disease does not

officials, nine infected and 12
exposed herds - about 16,000
hogs - have been destroyed in
New Jersy to prevent further
spread of the disease.
Denlinger said no cases of
hog cholera have been
detected in Pennsylvania.
Milk production
Total production in the
United States has fallen from
a high of almost 126 billion
pounds in the early 1960’s to
a present level of around
115.5 billion pounds. One can
hardly conclude from
production responses that
prices to dairy farmers have
been too high.
