Parts Per Million -Cu SNOW Friend or Foe? The prediction of snow brings moans and groans from the majority of our people; even weather forecasters apologize when they mention snow. Why is it this product of Mother Nature has become such an unwanted part of our weather? Could it be the cost of removal, or the extra effort required? Or might it be that too many of us are failing to realize the real value of a good snowfall? Snow is formed when we have a very cold upper at mosphere. The moisture vapors freeze-into white flakes which fall upon the earth in all sizes and shapes. On the average, 10 inches of snow equals one mch of rain in moisture content. Snow is nature’s one way of adding moisture to the earth. Think what a good snowfall would do at this time for the wheat growers of the Great Plain States. The sight of dancing flakes should bring excitement to both young and old, as the earth gradually turns white. Snowfall is an Act of God and one of nature’s most decorative elements. As the snowflakes pile up, they provide protection for all types of plants and vegetation. Most cases of winter-kill of crops and plants can be prevented, if the plants are snow-covered at the time of the extremely cold weather. Zero weather without snow can kill winter grains such as wheat and barley, as experienced by local growers. Bare ground freezes deeply, while ground under several indies of snow freezes very little. The heaving of plants out of the ground by alternate freezing and thawing can be prevented by being covered with several inches of snow. Strawberry plants under snow will not be damaged by cold weather; the same is true for wheat, barley or alfalfa. However, without snow cover many of these plants will be heaved out of the ground and will die. We’ll admit that severe snowstorms with huge drifts are dangerous and impose hardships on many folks. Driving becomes more dangerous and snow plowing equipment costs money. The disruption of communication lines is an economic blow to any community. There is little doubt that all of us can get along without these extra weather problems. On the other hand, think of the benefits. We should consider the value of winter sports programs based upon snow. How can the youngsters enjoy sledding without snow? The popular sports of skiing and snowmobiling are built upon adequate snow cover. The beauty of snowfall, and the extra comfort of home and the fireplace, are all plus factors of nature’s most cleansing element - snow. Therefore, the next time you hear snow in the weather forecast, or arise in the morning to a new snowfall, think of the good things that Mother Nature has given to mankind with the snow. It has an important place on earth, along with the sun, rain, air, and the wind. Snow protects the earth the same as the blanket over a baby in its crib. NOj S0 4 Water Holding Cap.
