—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 13, 1976 16 Red Rose Beef Club elects new officers By HEUSSA PIPER LANCASTER - The basement meeting room in the Farm and Home Center here was overflowing with 4- Hers, would-be 4-Hers and their parents during a recent re-organizational meeting'of the Red Rase Baby Beef and Lamb Club. Perhaps It waa the in fluence of Jim Greider’s spectacular win at the State Farm Show or the en couragement of young Bonnie Sue Frey’s first year success, but whatever the case, many youths in the county attended the meeting as a prelude to another 4-H season. A panel discussion was Officers for the Red Rose Baby Beef and Lamb Club were recently elected at their reorganizational meeting. Elected were (coun terclockwise) Linda Good held prior to the elections and several 4-Hcra who had won outstanding awards during the show season addressed suggestions to the younger people in the audience. Numerous anecdotes of dealing with the beef and sheep projects flowed across the mike, often to the amusement of the parents who had shared in the incidents. Jim Grelder told of walking his steer at 11 pjn. along Rt 30 and having truck drivers wave in recognition. A serious note from one leader. Bud Diehm, reminded parents and members alike of the serious nature of the community zoning laws which had threatened several youths near Refton. Diehm and several members of the local zoning com mittee stressed the im portance of becoming in volved in government planning so as to protect agriculture in the small towns. Larry Faua was driving a tractor out of the barn to haul fertilizer when a spark from the engine supposedly caught the structure on fire. Robert Kulp, 24, a volun teer fireman suffered a broken jaw while fighting the blaze when he was hit with a large pipe. Other firemen had tried to throw the pipe out of the structure when it bounced off a beam and caught Kulp on the side of his bead. Kulp was taken to Lancaster General for treatment The Rapbo Townabip structure was burned to the first floor with an estimated $40,000 loss. Contents in the barn which were also lost were estimated to value about $BOOO. Although the proximity of the barn fires caused many to believe that arson might be suspected, fire officials still contend that each blaze had a specific origin related to natural causes.
