Saturday, Feb. 21. 1976 22 Order 2 on ‘collision path 9 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - ‘‘Proposals calling for a reduction in the blend price (for milk) during these in flationary times simply arc not acceptable to producers in the New York - New Jersey Federal Milk Marketing Order 2 area." Arden Tewksbury, President of the 8000 dairy farmer member Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative, made this statement while testifying on proposed changes in Order 2, during a public hearing In New York City, on Wednesday. ‘‘Those proposals dealing with price adjustments, which Eastern believes will result in a reduction in the blend price to milk producers ranging from 15 cents to 30 cents per hundred pounds, could be disastrous to the producers in this milkshed,” charged Tewksbury. The Co-op leader further stated that such price ad justments are a deviation from the fundamental concept of farm-point pricing which Eastern Milk Producers has long defen ded. He explained that when a dairy farmer sells a ton of hay or a dairy cow, the buyer purchases it directly at the farm and pays whatever transportation costs are associated with the sale. By contrast, when a dairy farmer buys feed or an WHO’S MINDING THE MIIKP automobile, he pays the transportation costs delivered to the farm. Therefore, Tewksbury concludes, this fundamental principle should also apply to milk. The Meshoppen, Pa. dairyman further stated that a reduction in the New York - New Jersey Order blend price will further aggravate and distort the milk price mis-alignment between Order 2 producers and producers under adjoining Federal Milk Marketing Orders. In his concluding remarks, Tewksbury urged that some approach be taken to provide for better equalization of prices between producers shipping to various markets m the northeast. In con junction, he recommended an approach to prevent further deterioration of cooperative membership in Federal Milk Marketing Order 2. “With the downward trend in membership of the cooperatives who are responsible for the representation of producers in the functioning of the Order, and with the possible adoption of the proposed amendments dealing with price reductions, this mUkshed, in my view, is on a serious collision path,” stressed Eastern’s president.
