produces
volume of food
ANNAPOLIS Maryland
farmers, despite a three
decade urban population
boom in their state which has
seen their numbers and their
farmlands shrink, still are
able to produce 56.5 percent
of the basic food needs of the
state.
This figure was cited by
Agriculture Secretary
Young D. Hance in noting
that Maryland is observing
“Maryland Agriculture
Week.”
Hance said, “I asked
Richard P. Parsons,
Director of the Maryland
Department of Agriculture’s
Division of Marketing, to
investigate the degree of
self-sufficiency potential we
have in Maryland in the
basic food groups.
“In summary, our dairy
industry has the present
capacity to supply our needs,
our poultry industry can put
more than enough chickens
on our tables, our vegetable
growers could supply about
