Dept, of Ag. tightens restrictions of livestock movement from quarantined areas HARRISBURG -■ The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has tightened restrictions on livestock imported from states or areas under quarantine for brucellosis disease. Under the amended code, a permit is required from the Pennsylvania Agriculture Department’s director of the Bureau of Animal Industry before entry of any livestock from a quarantined area. Brucellosis is a bacterial disease that annually causes millions of dollars in losses in cattle and swine production in the United States. Dr. Everett E. Denlinger, director of the Bureau of Animal Industry, said that aside from the new permit Rose specialist to speak at Longwood KENNETT SQUARE - J. Benjamin Williams, an in dependent rose specialist and breeder, will speak on the subject “The Secret to Growing Good Roses” when he addresses a Longwood Gardens’ audience, February 11. His talk will be the second of the 1976 Wednesday Evening Hor ticulture Lecture Series designed for home gar deners. Williams has been growing roses since he was fourteen years old and has been ac tive in the American Rose Society as a director and consulting rosarian since 1953. In 1968 he won a Silver Medal at the Bagatelle Concours International Rose Trials in Paris, as well as a Certificate of Merit in Rome, for one of his new hybrid seedling entries. His red hybrid tea, the “Mississippi Rose,” has been registered with the American Rose Society and grows in the garden of the Governor’s Mansion in Films shows 100 years of agricultural research One hundred years of agricultural research are commemorated in a 28- minute sound, color film produced by the state agricultural experiment stations across America. According to Dr. William E. McDaniel, director of the Delaware Agricultural Experiment Station, “Un finished Miracles” was produced to help celebrate the centennial year of the agricultural experiment stations in the United States. The first state experiment station wv* founded in Connecticufe*in 1875. The Delaware Experiment Station wac founded in 1888 at what is now the University of Delaware. The film, which illustrates the progress of agriculture and the wrok of scientists at the agricultural experiment stations, is dedicated to researchers who are finding ways to increase agricultural productivity and improve the stabdity of the nation’s food supply without increasing the requirement, livestock fctan quarantined areas will have to be accompanied by proof of two consecutive negative tests from the herds of origin. These tests are not required of livestock im ported for slaughter. The Agriculture Depart ment waived the usual procedure of posting notice, inviting written comment and waiting 30 days before putting the amendment into effect because it was felt that a delay in enforcement would pose a threat to the cattle industry of Penn sylvania. Outbreaks or brucellosis in Texas may draw a quarantine by the United States Department of Agriculture of all the cattle Jackson, Mississippi. His clear pink floribunda, “Rose Parade,” was one of three 1975 All-American Rose selections. Williams has also been recognized with a Golden Rose Medallion, a prestigious award given worldwide to only twenty one outstanding rose breeders. The lecture will be held in the Ballroom near the Longwood Main Con servatory at 8:30 pan. Ad mission to tiie lecture will be by payment of the day’s $l.OO admission fee. The con servatories, featuring spring bulbs, acacias and camellias, will open for one hour before and after Mr. William’s lecture. Longwood Gardens is located at the junction of U.S. Route 1 and Pa. A fellowwas walking along the street one day with two small boys, each wailing loudly. A neighbor yelled to him, asking what was the matter. “What’s wrong with the whole world,” replied the man. “I’ve got three pieces of candy and each boy wants two!” in that state. Since Texas exports a substantial number of livestock to Pennsylvania, tightened import restrictions were considered essential. Specifically, the new conditions for importing livestock from quarantined areas are: -The importer must obtain a prior permit from the director of the Bureau of Animal Industry for all classes of animals.
